Those who do or know the area I'd love some info on some things to do, places to go, great spots to eat and drink. We are set up in Destin at the moment but plan on doing at least the perimeter of the state over the next month or more. I just left to do a week long shift back in Canada, its been pretty stormy in Destin for a week it seems so I'm excited to come back for some sunshine

I'm looking at you Chief @Chief

The Keys and Orlando are definitely the attractions. Especially with kids. St. Augustine in North Florida is a pretty city with great history and there is a nice camp nearby called Faver Dykes State Park if you guys need to park the trailer.

Jacksonville is pretty urban, but has nice beaches, but since we are in North Florida, the weather is starting to turn.

A nice place for your trailer here is Hana Park, which is beautiful and it has it's own beach access. But again, I'm not sure about attractions.

Either way, let me know anywhere you end up and I will try to meet you for food and drinks at least!

handy dandy travel brochure for the central gulf coast. Tampa Bay

Tampa-

The riverwalk-free
you can walk or ride your bikes along the path. its downtown and plenty of good eats...and parks (curtis hixon has a great playground and water play area), museums..downtown stuff.

Family Fun
here's a link to family friendly things to do on the river walk. when my kids were little we hit up the aquarium a bunch. they have a touch tank. your tots might dig touching a sting ray.and..a water play area. there's also a kids museum.

from the river walk...there's a cheap trolley that will take you to channel side and ybor city...check 7th avenue..get a cuban and a devil crab...it's what that area of town in known for...and cigars.
Ybor City
channel side -Home

there's an ikea in ybor. your wife might like tooling around there for a bit. not sure if you guys have one in your area...but it's something. and they have a kids area so you can sign your kids in for a few..then go grab drinks a block away at a local brewery. not sure you're supposed to do that, but how would they ever know. :)

DO NOT accidentally wonder north of Ybor city into the college hill neighborhood.( stay on the south side of the interstate) it's a roll 'em up lock the doors neighborhood. not trying to scare ya. ybor is plenty safe...just stay below 9th ave and between 15th and 22nd streets. the avenues go higher to the north.

Manatees - Free
they always hang out in this area during the winter..there's a viewing center with a board walk..it's fun and free.
Manatee Viewing Center - Tampa Electric

Hillsborough river state park- you'll see an alligator here...for sure.
Florida State Parks

Busch Gardens- they have a nice kids park..with kids style coasters...a decent safari ride..and a nice gorilla habitat
Born for BG

Palmetto-
Southeastern guide dog..play with puppies. my kids begged me to take them here constantly...who doesn't love 12 lab puppies crawling all over..plus you're helping socialize service animals..so it's good for the soul
Hug A Puppy - Southeastern Guide Dogs

St. Pete-
one of the best beaches..in my opinion. Pinellas County, Florida, Park & Conservation Resources - Fort De Soto Park
especially if you're not into the touristy fla beach thing.
if so clearwater Your Concierge for Clearwater Beach, Florida - Clearwater Beach .com is your place otherwise visit ft. desoto
p.s..if you get in the water in january..people will know you're from canada. :) might be perfect beach water weather for y'all though. it's currently 77 degrees.

gotta get a grouper sandwich while you're across the bay. frenchy's in my fav...but there are others
Grouper Sandwich Hot Spots

Dali museum http://thedali.org/...if you like this sort of thing it's great...not sure your kids will dig it though.
but..st pete has a quirky-hipster cool vibe downtown area...good for walking around window shopping...if you're there the first friday of the month they have a family friendly street festival
First Friday St. Pete - Downtown St. Pete's best block party.

Mazzaro's Italian Market definitely get something to eat here.

Sunken Gardens | Visit St Petersburg Clearwater Florida...great for exploring and chilling.

if you're going to be around Tampa at the end of january..ya gotta check out the pirate invasion. BUT..only do the kid friendly parade..because people do party like pirates, arrrgh! and your kids will see way too many boobs.
ya don't need to buy a ticket to the parade...that's only if you want to sit in the bleachers...like the old people.
Gasparilla Pirate Festival | Just another WordPress siteGasparilla Pirate Festival | Just another WordPress site kids parade- Children’s Parade »

sanibel island- a little further south of tampa bay but locally famous for it's shells on the beach...does canada have shells on the beach or pebbles?
take the sunshine skyway on interstate 275 south..it's a cool cable span bridge with a great view of the bay.
Welcome to Sanibel Island.com!

if i think of more stuff. i'll let ya know.

Awesome post! Thanks for taking the time to write something up that's very useful and not just link sites I could find myself.

I'm definitely getting into that water lol. I saw a sign the other day in Destin inviting people to join in on the polar bear swim there, no....please....not the nice white and and Luke warm water.....;)

We love eating out and just walking around as well, that pirate parade soumds like fun for the kids.

Every chance we get to do an aquarium or zoo we get in there, anotger good suggestion.

And yes Canada has beaches with sand, shells and pebbles. Check out the pictures I posted in my RV thread when we were in Tofino, its beautiful there.

Thanks in advance for any thing else you toss in :)

then ya can take 98 the rest of the way down. (double check that..it's been a while since i've made that drive.)

tubing is something else we do in central florida...it's on the way south ..and you can rent tubes/kayaks/canoes.
rainbow river Rainbow River Canoe and Kayak Rainbow Springs Florida Canoeing Kayaking and this Florida State Parks
ichetucknee river Florida's best tubing river: Ichetucknee State Park near Gainesville | Florida Rambler
withlachochee river WITHLACOOCHEE RIVER CANOE RENTAL & RV PARK

and it's pretty redneckish and hillbilly in those parts...lot's of chewin' tabaccy rebel flag wearing ma's and pa's...but a very beautiful part of the state

we might have to screen name bet on if it's cletus or bo dean who rents ya the tubes.

You live in central fucking Florida and you're talking shit?

If it weren't for the theme parks you would be southern Georgia just like the rest of the state north of Palm Beach County.

It really is, for people from cold weather places, it's beach time right now.
Locals will be in snow jackets. Second set of customers yesterday were in snow jackets, lined with fur. It was 68 out.

In my county, we have the cool drive through safari zoo, Lion Country. It's a really nice zoo but is expensive.
I would definitely look for the opportunity to do an airboat ride. It's been so long since I've gone, I don't know any good ones.
John D. MacArthur state park is a great place to go. They have canoe rentals for cheap and a nice, quiet ground. Since school is back in, right now it should be quiet.
The Morakami Museum in Delray is gorgeous and they have fun stuff this time of year.

Your grade 8 pick up techniques are ineffective on me, being a jerk will not make me want to hook up with you. Ask nicely and I'll consider a pint or three on me. Judging by your posting history I assume you make minimum wage, I can also provide transportation.

Airboat ride is a must and we haven't missed a zoo yet along the way. Also I set my stat to 20C (68F) usually at home, that's shorts and T weather.
