I just reinstalled my OS and had to spend 30 minutes turning off all the intrusive data collection settings in Windows 10. Then they gave me a chance to read their privacy policy, as if it were going to appease my concerns. This is what I find:

Everyone develops for Windows. I've been running a dual boot system for the last five years and logged into the Linux partition maybe twice. Just not worth the struggle imo.
What kind of apps are you using? Most apps are web apps nowadays. Beyond that, I mostly just use development apps which usually has a Linux version first. I haven't used Windows in years.

whether or not you're serious, I'm reasonably confident MS would and has snuffed out anyone from trying to compete with them.

I use Ring Central for work and Pro Tools for play. I wanna like Linux, but it doesn't mesh with my needs.

Which distro are you using because that can make all the difference
Make sure you are using the proper distro for what you are looking to do

I don't actually find those things in the OP alarming. Every one of them is needed for services that we as consumers request and use...

Save passwords
Auto fill
Auto connect wifi
Instant pay without pulling out credit card
Relevant ads instead of random ads
Instant messenger peer to peer file transfer

You are already fucked if you use a smart phone for everything, it doesn't really matter anymore. You think Apple or any other company doesn't do this?

I'm okay with this if the data doesn't leave the control of the company whose services I am using. Google knows everything about me and uses this information to sell targeted ads. The companies buying the ads don't actually get the data, just the use of Google's targeting services. Where I have a problem is when my data is sold to a third-party. This should not be allowed without consent.

Trump signs measure to let ISPs sell your data without consent

Republicans will say they removed this regulation because it treated web services and ISPs differently. I agree that the rule wasn't perfect, but they definitely went the wrong direction in altering it. After that fake rationalization we won't see any further protection in this area from the current administration.

This is a step in the right direction...

To kick off the new year ahead of Data Privacy Day we are giving our Windows Insiders an early preview of the Windows Diagnostic Data Viewer coming in our next release of Windows. Our commitment is to be fully transparent on the diagnostic data collected from your Windows devices, how it is used, and to provide you with increased control over that data. This is all part of our commitment to increase your trust and confidence in our products and services.

In addition, the Microsoft Privacy Dashboard will enable you to see and manage more data associated with your Microsoft account. These changes are part of the greater enhancements we are rolling out now and in the coming months.

It really depends on your perspective
Essentially you are giving up privacy for convenience
Some will be dead set against it (myself) and others will see it as no problem at all (yourself)
Really neither of us are wrong

Phones are even worse
Nearly Every app does the same shit, then you have the actual phone doing the same as well

We give up privacy for everything these days. We want to be safe and comfortable.
I'd rather keep my privacy
I feel much safer and comfortable having certain levels of privacy
I do not need the covieniences and actually prefer not having those conveniences and using my brain instead
I come from a time where computers were not easy though and honestly wish they stayed that way instead of trying to give everyone and their dog access

Edit: I am not arguing that you are wrong
In fact I agree with you that the majority of people feel exactly how you said
I just disagree with what I consider laziness and dumbing down of society, but that is the western way
Makes everything easy so nobody has to think
