Story updated at 7:15 p.m. ET to reflect UFC President Dana White’s conformation to MMAjunkie that the fight is booked and Covington will be stripped of the interim welterweight title.

In the wake of an injury to interim welterweight champ Colby Covington, the UFC has booked a fight between undisputed champ Tyron Woodley and top contender Darren Till for UFC 228.

Woodley (18-3-1 MMA, 8-2-1 UFC) today told MMAjunkie that bout agreements for the fight are not yet signed, but the matchup is likely to take place for the Sept. 9 pay-per-view card at American Airlines Center in Dallas. The news was first reported by ESPN.com. MMAjunkie also confirmed the fight with UFC President Dana White, who also said Covington will be stripped of the interim strap when Woodley and Till fight.

I dislike Dana's inconsistency.

I do however very much like there being one less interim belt.

If the person we all agreed not to discuss simply knew when to turn it off, as opposed to leaving it on 100% of the time, his fake belt wouldn't be in jeopardy, imo.

Woodley saying Colby's got a sinus infection

Then Tyquil is what he needs so they should fight

Lol. The UFC should just get rid of belts and have fights for no real reason. They clearly mean as much

By stripping an interum belt they took the little validity of that strap it had. Just end those interim titles for good.

two guys should be matched up for the to-be-vcant interim title is what I'm thinking...

This is a message from the UFC to Colby. They needed to let them know how little he matters in the grand scheme of things. If it were a fighter who hadn’t brought the drama they wouldn’t have stripped him so quickly. To be real, it’s a raw deal for him.

Every dipshit in the media thinks Colby is Chael, but it seems like the UFC sees him more like what he really is - Jacob Volkmann.

He hasn't generated any hype outside the bubble and he's caused a lot of trouble. It's not the surprising that they aren't actually his biggest fan, despite people thinking taking on a heel persona will automatically make you a star. You've still got to do other things, like lick Dana's bloated red balls like Chael does.

First part is right, but that doesn't mean the 2nd part is. This was a particularly stupid interim belt as Tyron had been an active champ prior to injury and was due back very soon after this belt was created.

The purpose of an interim belt is either to establish a number 1 contender that the champ cannot avoid, or to potentially crown a new champ if the real champ's future is uncertain.

If the interim champ can't fight the real champ, then it's even more of a redundant belt, so keeping it would be dumb.

Making an interim title made little sense.

Stripping the interim champ makes little sense.

How does it not make sense? What the hell is the point of keeping it?
They strip him after two months because he has a documented surgical procedure?

There should be a minimum length of time a guy is inactive before they strip him. One year would be sufficient imo.

If it happened to a more exciting fighter, I doubt he'd be getting stripped.

I agree with the last sentence, but two Wongs don't make a honky-ass cracker.

UFC making rules up as they go?
No surprise here.

They create an interim title because the champ is boring.

They then strip that interim title because the interim champ is boring.

They're creating these problems themselves.

The good news, however, is that Till is not boring and will likely beat Woodley imo.

Bet the house on the Scouse.
