Some refs are recognized, for either respectful or less respected reasons. Such as Little Naitch and Earl Hebner.
On top of what the Beard said, they also communicate with the wrestlers sometimes on time left, communicate an upcoming spot between the two+ as a middle man, and being possible suffers of osteogenesis imperfecta for the sake of in match drama.

They are there to relay messages from the production team to the performers. Keeping things on track.
Tommy Long I believe his name was. He was a awesome ref back in the NWA. He would get right in there and push back. Had some funny moments. Once, flair pushed him pretty good for over officiating. So Long pushed flair back and Flair just hit his back. Sold it like He was hit by a Truck. He looked around an got up and went back to Wrestling the other guy while looking scared of the ref. Good time. Good times.
