He wasn't military or swat. He was a city police officer with two years experience, and he was fired for the engraving. The content of the engraving shows a total disregard for justice, and the act of modifying the rifle without permission demonstrates an intent to circumvent SOP. Both of those things are perfectly relevant to the case of this kid unnecessarily dying.

Thanks for the info man
Knew he was on the force for 5 years max
Also was not aware modifying the gun was against policy
What a fucking idiot

I wouldn't go as far, but we do have incompetent cops out there, unfit cops. You see these cases and you see the cops losing control over the situation, often escalating the situation with sometimes fatal results. It's a sad thing really, and I understand why it angers people.
Yep, I know some extermely intelligent cops
I also know some that are dumber than a doorknob lol

I had a psychotic patient once. Off the chain in a manic phase. Constant ramblings and unexplained rage. Gave him meds and when he started slowing down the things he said.....his story whether real or imagined was scary as fuck.
Basically he was military and fast tracked to special forces. Top of his class on everything. Finally gets shipped off to war and his chance to shine. Something goes wrong (won't tell that part) and he gets shipped home and discharged. He was distraught that he was so good at what he did and never got to use his skills to defend his country. It wasn't long as the meds kicked in that the defending his country part was dropped. He basically was an expert trained to kill and and never got a chance to do it. The need was still strong.

My point, he was a functioning citizen for years after coming home. No one knew he was dreaming of his chance to kill. They are definitely out there. And I'd say trying to be a cop would appeal to these types.
Great story!
Thanks for sharing

Between this incident and the vegas shooting, get ready for more security measures at hotels nationwide.

I saw one conspiracy type video about the vegas shooting where the narrator raises some questions about what's going on behind the scenes and who will benefit from putting body scanners at every hotel on a nationwide scale.

Not saying this was planned or a conspiracy, but you know what they say, never let a tragedy go to waste.

With the exception of 1 person, all of the people that I knew from high school or met over the years that ended up as an officer are absolute idiots or are the worst person imaginable for the job. In a couple of cases I'd be more comfortable with Tank Abbott being a cop than these dickheads.

That's bad man

3 of my friends are cops, 2 of them extremely close friends
All 3 are good cops with good heads on their shoulders
The one can be kind of a prick but he's always been like that, won't use his power in a way he shouldn't, but he can be an asshole for sure
The other is just a great guy
The 3rd is cool af, was one of the biggest pot heads I knew until maybe a year or 2 before he became a cop. He's now a detective and is working his way up the ranks
He's the kind of guy that will ride around in a cop car with cop killa blasting lol
Not joking, he has done that

A girl that I know quite well married a guy that I knew that was always one of the guys that tried too hard to make everyone believe he's a badass. Studies aikido and bullshit and wonders why no one believes him. He's a state trooper now. I'm shocked, truly shocked, that he hasn't ended up in a shooting.

Finally watched with sound.

In the moment, the cop was justified under the law. Guy reaches down to waist band (to pull up shorts?) And they shoot. He didn't follow their instructions. He got shot.

Now...
Sue the shit out of the department. How is that good training? Why wasn't he face down, legs crossed, hands flat out on ground assessed to be a low enough threat to approach and cuff? What is the point of having him undo all that to crawl towards them??

Supposedly the guys drinking. Lots of disturbances will involve drinking. Why are commands complicated enough to create the situation?

Cop's a power hungry ass. But I wouldn't convict or acquit on that.
Coming from a former LEO I believe you’re right. The shooting was justifiable if he believed the victim was armed. But his poor tactics resulted in an unnecessary loss of life. The city is going to pay out millions.

That is a fairly long list of reasons for termination, so saying he was fired or the engraving is not accurate. I disagree with your assessment of his mindset based on the engraving, and apparently so did the court of law.

Not following SOP is a fact relevant to his mindset. 26 is young, and by no means does fathering a child automatically mature your thought process.
An unauthorized change of a non-functioning piece of equipment isn't exactly a staggering indicator of whether or not someone is a calculated murderer.

Yeah, that was fucked up.
The less moving they do the better. Have him lay face down spread eagle then go up and cuff him.

Poor training.

What law? Sounds like a law that needs to be changed if it's justifiable to kill an unarmed man. Is it justifiable to kill an unarmed cop if you imagine he "could" "possibly" have a gun? Why should it be okay the other way around then?

And he didn't have a gun, and he got shot. Maybe be sure he has a gun before executing people? Just a crazy thought......
And if you execute someone who didn't have a gun - maybe go to jail or get the death penalty... another crazy thought.
The guy reached back after being told not to and the cops were there because someone said he had a gun. If he did have a gun, the amount of time to grab it at his waist band, aim and fire is a fraction of a second. It's easy for us to look at this and say it was a bad shoot, but if you are dealing with someone you don't know and you think he has a gun on him and he reaches behind him after being told repeatedly not to - I wonder how you'd react?

That said, this situation didn't have to go down like this. Very poor procedures.

“For him to be safe, for us to be safe, there was one simple rule and that was to keep his hands in the air,” Langley said.
LOL. While crawling? Whatever dude. So stupid.

Those are all the rules he broke by having his service rifle engraved without permission. Except the last one I think, which looks like it was for the indictment itself.

Is the photo a pic of the shooter or the sergeant? It should definitely be the sergeants photo being released.

Also, I thought a good chunk of Americans are constantly waiving guns around in the privacy of their own homes or hotel rooms. Is that against the law or a reason to call the cops?

The guy gets shot for making a mistake yet those cops made numerous mistakes through out their actions in that encounter.

That cop even had the other cops nervous and dropping room cards and shit.

So a drunk man got killed because he was unable to follow highly specific demands from a police officer.

No weapon present. No aggression. No threats. A sobbing drunk dude.

Yet he gets shot multiple times.

I agree the guy wasn't acting like someone who was suddenly going to go Billy The Kid and start firing shots, but it can happen fast. When they suspect a gun, it's assumed that's what the suspect is reaching for when they are told not to reach. They don't have time to determine what - if anything - was being reached for. It's a life and death decision, and if they hesitate and the guy did have a gun - they've got bullets heading their way. You guys must be a lot braver than me, because that's not a situation I'd want to be in.

I did a quick google search and found this example of a guy just opening fire on a cop. He wasn't acting suspicious at all. It happens fast (it's not graphic). There are plenty of videos like this where the suspect gets shots off at the cops. Some of you guys are asking these dudes to gamble with their lives. That's crazy talk.

As for the video in this thread, I think we can all agree that the procedural techniques attempting to get the guy in custody were horrible.

LMAO. No, that's not how it is over here. Well, except for Detroit or Chicago. ;)

My assumption is the person who called it in assumed the guy was up to no good.

As for the law, unless the hotel has specific restrictions, you are allowed to have a gun with you. Different states have different rules about travelling with weapons, but generally speaking I believe hotels fall under the "temporary residence" guidelines.

If the cops had knocked on the door, explained the call they received and the guy showed them the weapon and it was legally owned - no issues. But the guy and his companion left their room at the wrong time and the sergeant went full Charles Bronson on them and sent the situation to FUBAR mode.

I've been to hotels in the middle East that have body scanners when you go inside. And armed security out front. It's kinda weird
