Marlon Moraes among four fighters CSAC recommends move up in weight after UFC Fresno

The California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) wants four fighters to move up a weight class after competing at UFC Fresno earlier this month.

UFC bantamweight star Marlon Moraes and three others were flagged by CSAC doctors after weighing in on fight day well over the commission regulations of staying within 10 percent of the contracted weight, per a document obtained Friday by MMA Fighting.

Iuri Alcantara, Davi Ramos and Luke Sanders were the three other fighters recommended to move up. CSAC will not license the four fighters at their current weight classes in the future “without extensive medical documentation from a licensed physician certifying the weight class is appropriate and verified by CSAC physicians....”

So if he weighed 150 on fight day then that's too much according to their guidelines.

Damn. He always comes in looking hard as nails. I always thought he was very smart about his weight cutting.

I was unaware of this 10% stipulation.
Anyway, he certainly has the power to move up, although he certainly loses any benefit of size.
It'd be interesting to know which commissions hold similar stipulations, and how the UFC feels about this.
Nevada is the big bucks and no issues there that I've heard
I see Marlon doing what he has to do extensively to stay clear of fighting his training partner Frankie Edgar.

As of right now it's only California that has this.

It's part of Andy Foster's efforts to curb extreme weight cutting. Whether or not that will help is a different story. One thing for certain is that it will cut down on the number of fighters willing to fight in California if they're the only ones doing this.

No DC, no Conor, no Rockhold, no boatloads of guys that routinely cut more than 15 to 20lbs.

Isn't that the whole point though? It's supposed to be ultimate fighting, not ultimate weight cutting. If these guys regularly dehydrate themselves past what is considered safe in order to make weight, they should not be fighting in that weight class. If everyone is forced to adhere to this, the end result is same sized guys fighting each other.

Of course some fatties like DC will have to either get a better diet or move up, but for most of these guys, it will be for their own good.

Related to the ufc — if everyone cuts weight, no one gets an advantage

Ya that’s what I’m saying.. if everyone cuts weight, no one gets an advantage — so there’s no point in cutting weight. But when one person does and the other doesn’t, then he gets an advantage

I think that is probably true. But at the same time I like a lot of what Andy is doing, he seems to be legitimately concerned with the fighters health and well being. It's been shown time and time again that many fighters will make bad decisions with weight cuts and what not. In some ways I'm ok with a little more oversight like what Andy is doing.

The 10 Point plan that is in place in California has been endorsed by the ABC, and thereby recommended to all the ABC member AC’s. It is up to the individual state AC’s to adopt the plan, hopefully we will see more states do so soon.

I don’t think he did either, but he was cutting a significant percentage of his body weight as evidenced by his fight day weight. That amount of weight cut by water weight loss is inherently dangerous.

That's some bullshit! Didn't Marlon only get like a week and a bit notice for his last fight???
Pretty sure he was a last minute replacement, so to penalize him on his weight when he didn't have time to properly prepare his body would be criminal.
