Daniel Cormier really had no plans to fight Stipe Miocic.

Ahead of his last fight against Volkan Oezdemir at UFC 220 in Boston, Cormier repeatedly said his days as a heavyweight were finished.

Cormier admitted that, while his time in the division was successful — he was 13-0 — it was more about not wanting to cut too much weight after a disastrous outing at the 2008 Olympics rather than a desire to compete at heavyweight that initially led him to the big boys' division.

Add to that, Cormier didn't want to come into conflict with his teammate and close friend Cain Velasquez, who is a former UFC heavyweight champion with designs on regaining that title once he returns to action later this year.

I kind of like that. It's like they were a mini union. And I love that DC didn't just think about himself and negotiate for himself. I love that he respected Stipe enough to involve him in that conversation and make sure they were both treated well.

Could be, but I only doubt it because I don't see either of these guys willingly taking a loss.
DC is old. He drops the first one, grinds out the rematch, then doesn't announce that he is retired until 6 months after the 2 years the UFC gives him to hold up the belt in true UFC fashion we get sold more interim title fights.

Can someone clarify this for me? I have read a half dozen articles on this and I’m still not sure the significance. Was it that DC called Stipe to get both of them to agree to the fight only if they both got a higher pay rate?

If DC wins, he should take the belt from dana, hand it to stipe's coach to have him put it around DC's waist, then retire in the cage just to show dana that he made another bad decision.
