I don't think guns will be or can be taken away in a manner that we are safer. The crazy guy that snaps will get something else, and the criminal will always have access to a weapon.

Shootings such as the latest one, or when a child is hit by a stray bullet, or while playing with a gun makes it very hard to defend gun ownership, or at leats the presence of guns in our society.

I do think there should be stricter background checks and also on medical history (I know that is private but suck it up nancy, you want a gun then take that on the chin). The key is mentally disturbed people or with such a background can walk up to a Walmart and get a gun to do whatever they plan to.

People talk about silencers and magazines that would hold 30 rounds, etc. Bitch if you need a silencer for your hearing you are a pussy and don't deserve a gun. If you need 30 bullets without reloading you need to learn how to shoot.... or run. You need to shoot 30 people to protect yourself? It means you are at ther wrong spot so run. Shooting 30 people will get you in jail no matter what your excuse is. In most self defense cases they (police) will come after you any ways. You will spend years in court.

I find myself in the middle of the gun debate, it's where I am politically as well.

Gun control is probably the ugliest subject to debate. Just so much emotion, stubbornness and ignorance colliding head on. Everyone knows what a gun is and what they do, but the percentage of people who actually know the necessary technical information (how guns actually work, classifications, what's banned and what isn't, etc) seems to be very small. CBS claimed on Twitter that Paddock was shooting "automatic rounds".

If you want to see an abundance of shitty logic (on both sides), watch a gun control debate.

Here is one correlation between state gun laws and mass shootings - CNNPolitics
"Whether a state has a large capacity ammunition magazine ban is the single best predictor of the mass shooting rate in that state, " said Michael Siegel, a community health science professor at Boston University, who conducted the analysis. These states are associated with a 63% lower rate of mass shootings, according to his analysis.

People need to stop equating "Gun violence" with violence. When you look at actual violent crime statistics from places you'll see that gun control had no bearing on it. As I said in another thread, the U.K. is now on their third round of "if we ban this people will stop hurting to each other." Because their gun and then knife bans, didn't have the effects they had promised. At some point we should consider treating mental illness and just stop being fucking assholes to each other.

Asking for ID or a background check to buy a gun seems extremely racist. Liberals have been telling me that millions of people don't have an ID to show to vote. How can we as a country continue to oppress by asking for ID to exercise your 2nd amendment right?

And when was the UK's last mass shooting?

You mean "undocumented" gun owners should get amnesty? They are not breaking the law, they're just "undocumented". I support your cause sir, showing ID and background check is oppresion.

Or maybe he didn’t want to politicize it right then and there while meeting people that were just shot.
Yes. That’s it, he’s using the judgement and sensitivity he’s famous for and he’s waiting to discuss this important issue at a later time. I’m sure he’ll get to it tomorrow.

I’m sure he will have some outlandish Tweet soon, but I also think he realized the gravity of the situation and held off.

Trump has made his career out of politicizing tragedy and people’s fears. If it were a Muslim killer he would have been tweeting about closing the borders 5 minutes after it happened. He is bought and paid for by NRA lobbyists and he will NEVER address gun laws.

When was America's last subway bombing?
When was the last time you realized you couldn't answer a question and decided to TRY to change the subject because you realized you fell into your own trap?

I've said a thousand times that deplorably violent crime is not okay regardless the implement used to carry it out. Anyone with common sense would realize this. When you look at "Gun violence" "Truck violence" "Knife violence" etc, you're attempting to treat an issue not by its cause bu by its symptom. The issue we need to be looking at is violence, full stop. You don't get to throw your hands up in disgust at Vegas and say "you know if he didn't have guns this wouldn't have happened!" because the statement is categorically false. If a rich guys loses his mind and wants to kill a group of people legal access to firearms isn't going to stop him.

That's at least a better response.
Now if he didn't have guns - do you think he would have killed nearly 60 people and critically wounded over 500?
Nope.

Unless your comeback is 'if he had a massive bomb'.
Then my response would be 'how often has that happened in the U.S.?' Very rare.Very difficult to do.
Guns are easy, to get & easy to kill many people with with no sweat.

A guy in France did worse with a rented truck. So no one has any reason whatsoever to believe for a second that guns are the lone way to kill a large captive audience. I believe McVeigh did even worse than both, but that was a long time ago.

Because guns are reasonably accessible and this is the logic applied to banning guns. "Take away the guns and the shootings stop." The problem with that argument is that we have countless examples that illustrate although shootings may stop, the violence doesn't. It's why the U.K. is a perfect example. Sure, they don't have many mass shootings. But they do have an absurd amount of stabbings, frequent bombings, and acid attacks. They also had someone assassinate a member of parliament with a gun he made in his basement last summer. If people want to have the "Why is America so violent?" that's a valid conversation to have, and probably should be had at some point when the left and right take 5 minutes out of their terribly important lives of blaming each other for all the world's ills but I digress. This idea that running 600 people over with a truck is just a fact of life, but shooting 600 people is 100% preventable if there were just a few more laws is complete and utter lunacy.

Watching those people from Florida yesterday were, shit, I don't know the word. Just worthless. "Don't ever let it happen again" seemed to be the mantra. Well, what the hell do you propose we do? Should we have armed militia in every school? Yeah, that would make me feel safe, until one of them misses their morning coffee and decides today is the day to go on a shooting spree. Don't ever let it happen again. What do you think mass shooters Skype with Trump and say, 'I think today is a great day to go on a shooting spree. What are your thoughts on that, Mr. President?' I'm going to guess that the answer to that would lean slightly to they probably don't.

Americans have guns. Lots of them. The price you pay for freedom, is every once in awhile, you have a random lunatic with one. So, instead of asking why we don't have an unachievable utopia, how about you offer a solution. What, you want everyone to just turn in their guns? Good f'n luck with that. Does it make any sense to disarm law abiding citizen to make them softer targets for those who don't? How are the 'gun free zones' working out? Uh - just call them targets. Guns are part of society, for better or for worse. Live your life, and be ready to run, take cover, or shoot back.

I don't really get what fantasy world some people live in.
