The USA's recent trend towards isolationism, its hostile trade actions, and a general disregard for the consequences more than one step ahead has reduced it's soft power and left a vacuum in global politics that is fertile ground for actions such as these from China.
There is too much investment within the U.S. market from oil exporters for the U.S. to lose influence even if they stopped all foreign oil consumption.Fair premise. But you'll have to post things that didn't develop as a direct result of policies anti Trump voters support....in order to blame it on Trump.
That is, again, the fastest track to China having a petrol-yuan is decreased oil usage by the US and increased oil usage by China.
That's been policy for ten years and is supported by many that are absolutely against Trump.
The perfect combo would be something like a huge federal domestic push for renewable energies, and deals like the Paris Accord that identify China as a developing country and allow a continued rush of Oil usage in the short term. All at once...US oil purchase vaccuum and China purchase increase.
Sound familiar?
Shifts away from oil, refusal to take over contracts in Iraq and Afghanistan out of a moral 'fairness'/guilt all push this direction.
I'm hardly advocating for a change.
The focus on reducing Reliance on foreign oil makes us lose our "Walmart status" when purchasing in such markets as the big customer that can abuse its position.
It's not that big of a deal.
The same focus on reducing Reliance on foreign oil is a national security issue and I would argue has longer-term effects on reducing incentives related to control those markets when we enter into diplomatic or non diplomatic conflicts. That extra consideration has probably not been a good one for our larger foreign policy.
But the again...maybe we'll get that importing going again...

This is part of the death by 1000 cuts. I agree that this isn't huge, but we can point out every little thing individually and say it's not that big of a deal. Over time they add up and one day you will realize what happened.
sold the Chinese missile technology & nuclear secrets like Bill didOr maybe that's hubris. Specifically, what would Hillary Clinton have done different to stop it Chinese Futures Market?
Everything is Trump's fault. Even multidecade long pushes for oil exchanges that come online when another country becomes the largest oil importer.
Says so in the article.
Interestingly, the way to control such things would be increasing our oil consumption to maintain largest customer status. Sooo....is that the complaint?
