The USA's recent trend towards isolationism, its hostile trade actions, and a general disregard for the consequences more than one step ahead has reduced it's soft power and left a vacuum in global politics that is fertile ground for actions such as these from China.

Fair premise. But you'll have to post things that didn't develop as a direct result of policies anti Trump voters support....in order to blame it on Trump.

That is, again, the fastest track to China having a petrol-yuan is decreased oil usage by the US and increased oil usage by China.
That's been policy for ten years and is supported by many that are absolutely against Trump.

The perfect combo would be something like a huge federal domestic push for renewable energies, and deals like the Paris Accord that identify China as a developing country and allow a continued rush of Oil usage in the short term. All at once...US oil purchase vaccuum and China purchase increase.

Sound familiar?

Shifts away from oil, refusal to take over contracts in Iraq and Afghanistan out of a moral 'fairness'/guilt all push this direction.

I'm hardly advocating for a change.
The focus on reducing Reliance on foreign oil makes us lose our "Walmart status" when purchasing in such markets as the big customer that can abuse its position.
It's not that big of a deal.

The same focus on reducing Reliance on foreign oil is a national security issue and I would argue has longer-term effects on reducing incentives related to control those markets when we enter into diplomatic or non diplomatic conflicts. That extra consideration has probably not been a good one for our larger foreign policy.

But the again...maybe we'll get that importing going again...

There is too much investment within the U.S. market from oil exporters for the U.S. to lose influence even if they stopped all foreign oil consumption.

I agree with that actually. I think the article is overblown. But even if it's results come true I think it's less of a big deal at this point in history than people make it out to be.

I suspect there will be some increasing commodity Focus, like the rare earth minerals that China seems focused on in North Africa that could supplant this oil conversation in a couple decades.

This is part of the death by 1000 cuts. I agree that this isn't huge, but we can point out every little thing individually and say it's not that big of a deal. Over time they add up and one day you will realize what happened.

But this example literally has nothing to do with Trump and would have happened under every other presidential option is my point. Nothing about this accelerated. It took over a decade and occurred primarily due to Market forces that we have mostly all supported as a country.

Or maybe that's hubris. Specifically, what would Hillary Clinton have done different to stop it Chinese Futures Market?

Everything is Trump's fault. Even multidecade long pushes for oil exchanges that come online when another country becomes the largest oil importer.
Says so in the article.

Interestingly, the way to control such things would be increasing our oil consumption to maintain largest customer status. Sooo....is that the complaint?

Build that wall. Who's going to pay for it? Mex...er, the US military.
Trump privately presses for U.S. military to pay for border wall
Donald Trump, who repeatedly insisted during the 2016 campaign that Mexico would pay for a wall along the southern border, is privately pushing the U.S. military to fund construction of his signature project.

Trump has told advisers that he was spurned in a large spending bill last week when lawmakers appropriated only $1.6 billion for the border wall. He has suggested to Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and congressional leaders that the Pentagon could fund the sprawling project, citing a "national security" risk.

You guys sure read a lot into a sarcastic MAGA. Apparently these four little letters mean Trump caused it, and Hillary wouldn't have let it happen. I'm just here occasionally sharing interesting articles while we wait for that nebulous return to our former glory I kept hearing about.

Would it have occured at this time with a competent president and administration? Too many variables to make an accurate projection, but it's undeniable that US foreign strategy has created a scenario where the world is more receptive to this new market.

Why I blew the whistle on the Rick Perry meeting (Opinion) - CNN

"The pictures showed Murray, who donated $300,000 to Donald Trump's presidential inauguration, give Perry an "action plan." Murray's company has previously lobbied the Trump administration to end new federal public health protections for greenhouse gas emissions and smog pollution, loosen mine safety rules, and cut the staff of the Environmental Protection Agency by "at least half."

Perry and Murray shook hands, hugged and agreed to get it done. Then they kept everything that happened that day a secret." -Simon Edelman, former Department of Energy chief creative officer
