Unreal how bad of a move this was. The guy took Toronto to a franchise record 60 wins, the no.1 seed in the East. It's not the top heavy Western conference but it's still a no.1 seed of an entire conference. Then he won in the first round against an inconsistent but super talented Wizards team. Sure they got swept by Cleveland. Most people who follow basketball though see that Lebron right now is playing at a level that is maybe as high of a level as anyone has played. Unless you are Golden St. or maybe Houston, you are not stopping Lebron and the Cavs right now. Some of the 4 games where close, others not really. But you can tell when the issue in losses is coaching, or players or a mix of both.

For example, a lot of the struggles the Sixers had against Boston was due to questionable coaching by the Sixers coach. It was a mix there, the players also had a lot of turnovers.

But the Raptors Cavs series, Duane was putting the guys in the right spots, it's not coaching when Demar Derozan underperforms and shoots really bad each game of the series It's not coaching when Lebron is playing as great as he ever has and makes those shots. It's not coaching when Jonas V did not match Kevin Love's intensity. The X's and O's, the motivation, the putting the guys in the right spots, especially the defense adn getting the bench to be consistent and bigtime, Duane did wonders in that this year.

Now they are gonna bring in a new coach, I bet they win less than 48 games next year, and won't be one of the top 4 seeds, Celts 76ers Cavs if Lebron stays, Wiz Bucks will all be better next year maybe some other teams in the east too. What are they to do with that coach, I doubt he will be as good as Duane Casey.

Crap move, at least to me

i think it's just a business decision. You just got romped by the Cavs, what are you going to do that will sell season tickets next year?

How does this sell tickets? They will get a coach, most likely not as good, and the team will have to adjust to the new coach and deal with a much tougher east. What will they say when the new coach becomes a lower seed and get kicked out of the playoffs even earlier next year?

By firing the coach they are saying it is his fault, and that a better coach would get them to the finals, so what will they say when the new coach is gonna win less games next year than this guy?

Awful move in my view, really shocking

They can’t get a fan base excited without making a major change to the team.

The fans have watched the team have excellent regular seasons only to be completely big brothered by the Cavs.

This season broke the fans spirits completely. We knew better to get our hopes up because we knew we were just a step below elite, and we’ve choked and performed horribly in the pressure of the playoffs for 3 straight years, but then the Raptors has such an incredible season, that the fans believed that maybe we had turned a corner. Getting manhandled again by the Cavs was a complete demoralization.

The franchise can’t afford to go into next season with the fans having the perception that the regular season is pointless, and that no matter how well they do and how many wins they amass they will be out coached and out played in the playoffs.

I don’t think Casey’s firing is a condemnation of his coaching ability, it’s largely a psychological and culture change.

Logical and sensible post but I think it’s still an unwise move

They should’ve probably waited to see how the off season plays out. LeBron is a nightmare matchup for them (and almost everyone), but he may be gone to the west next season. If not for LeBron, they may have a chance at winning the east next season. Boston is a completely different matchup for them.

Never been a fan of Toronto, but generally i hate to see guys get canned. Especially after what should be considered a successful season for them.

In the playoffs they stopped doing what had them looking better than ever all season. Instead of pushing the pace & ball movement, they walked it up, got into their plays with 15 seconds left on the shot clock, ending their plays with one guy trying to take someone 1-on-1 & firing up a bad contested shot. That's the style Casey's teams have played for his coaching career, sans the regular season this year, & it's the style he'll always revert to & it'll never beat an elite team.

LOL wtf, Casey took that team to heighs defensively they where not at before. Also, the Cavs where killing it on the fast break so it makes sense for Toronto to try to avert that by playing a walk it up style at time. Derozan played like shit, a coach can put the players in the right spot, and the players can fuck it up.

The Raptors overachieved due to coaching LOL, what are you even talking about. Lowry is their 2nd best player, good player but if he's your 2nd best player you ain;t a star team. Who the heck do you think coached up a bunch of bench guys no one had heard of, to playing great ball? That coach that is who.

They will be worse off next year for making this move, I will bump this thread, hopefully you show up this time next year.

Coaches have different strengths, Casey was great at developing players. What he was not good at was in game adjustments. When Kevin Love posted up CJ Miles 5 straight times with no adjustment made by Casey, & Love scored all 5 times, he deserved to be fired.

At the end of the day, if you can't get the job done in the playoffs it doesn't matter how many wins you get in the regular season. It's all about winning the championship. And when you lose a series in that embarrassing a fashion as against the Cavs, heads are going to roll.

if it's Coach Bud they're getting a big upgrade

Budenholzer? He's a good coach, not sure if that would be an upgrade, this Toronto team way over achieved and that is coaching. Despite what the talking heads say on TV, they really are not all that talented compared to toher elite teams. Toronto honestly has the talent of a 6 seed, solid team but nothing otu of the ordinary. Their bench played above their level, and Casey got more out of less.

They will struggle next year and they will regret this move I gather, we will see

Casey was overrated. Raptors are in a way better position without him.

I don’t like the firing of a coach because of expectations of people who don’t play the game nor understand real conditions.....appease the dodo’s in the stands who have dick do’s and can’t bend over to tie their own shoes?
Don’t feel bad for the coach though, he gets paid for chilling out now. Some team will hire him if he so chooses to get back in the game.....

Is anyone watching this? Brown & Tatum have more talent than anyone on the Raptors & will end up with better careers than anyone there, but they aren't better than them now now. Besides coaching, what explains this difference?
