Tecia Torres says she and Raquel Pennington agree with corner’s decision to let her fight

“Both us and our coaches agree with the decision made to go into the 5th round,” the post read. “We know Raquel more than anyone else and know if we let her give up on herself going into the last round she would have always regretted it. She fought with heart and grit until the end.”


Hmm.. looks like people will have to continue to feign outrage about something else.

No fighter wants to accept defeat. So of course they will soldier on, past the point when they should. That's why they need to have people in their corner who care enough to make the tough call for them.

I have been involved in similar situations as the cageside physician at an event (not in a pro fight however). I was standing there evaluating the fighter between rounds, heard the fighter say they wanted to stop, corner urged them to continue. I waited for the 10 second warning, then asked the fighter “do you want to continue?”- whatever they answered is what I recommended to the referee. Most of the time, they wanted to continue. I have seen referees do similar. Once a fight is in progress, fighter safety needs to be the responsibility of unbiased officials IN ADDITION to the fighter and corner who are operating in a cloud of adrenaline.
