Michael 'Venom' Page has sported a sensational highlight reel since 2012 -- his first year as a professional MMA fighter.

A simple YouTube video of London's Page can catch the eye of even the most casual fight fan. His style has been compared to that of the great Anderson Silva. And 12 fights into his career, he has yet to lose.

That said, the question around Page has always been: Can he beat top-level competition -- or is he a glorified can crusher?

That question will be answered in a way it's never been on Friday, when Page (12-0) faces David Rickels (19-4) at Wembley Arena in London. Rickels is a former lightweight title challenger and is in the prime of his career.

Page, 31, is used to criticism regarding the level of talent he's faced -- and isn't convinced Friday will be different. But anyone who follows the sport closely knows that Rickels is a different test for Page.

"It's weird, I think it's perspective and it depends on what happens," Page told ESPN. "Dave Rickels is a very established fighter, but if I was to go in there in one minute and land something crazy and finish the fight, everyone will continue to say I've only ever fought cans."

Page is an interesting case study in Bellator MMA's marketing strategy compared to other promotions.

The former freestyle kickboxer has eight appearances over five years under the Bellator banner, which highlights how slowly the promotion has brought him along. He has never headlined a card nor fought anyone considered to be near the top of his division.

Compare that to, say, the UFC's handling of middleweight Israel Adesanya. It's not a perfect comparison -- their backgrounds are not exactly the same -- but the UFC has already booked Adesanya three fights in 2018. In July, he will headline a card against proven contender Brad Tavares.

The differences in approach are obvious -- and Page says he doesn't know which is better. He does believe, however, it's time for Bellator to give him more of a push, and he believes that will happen with a win on Friday.

"The UFC is 100 percent keeping him active and putting him on a headline-type show," Page said of Adesanya. "I would say, this is the second time I am fighting in the U.K. and I haven't headlined a show. I still haven't been pushed in that way. Who's to say which is right and wrong? We'll find out."

"Selfishly speaking, I would love to be pushed in the same way and in the same manner."

That said, Page says he's very happy with his five-year relationship with Bellator -- even though he elected to add professional boxing to his plate in 2017. He intends to continue to box, but one can't help wonder if this is finally the year Page is truly tested in MMA.

And as a result of that, finally the year in which he breaks out.

"We'll be talking directly after this fight," Page said. "Hopefully it goes according to plan. If I do something similar to what I did last time I was in London (flying knee KO), it's ahead of the plan and we'll talk from there."

It would be cool but I'm worried that he's made of glass and will end up as a mid level Cain.

Hard to say, since no one's really been able to find his chin. He can go far if he keeps it that way.
He's talented enough but he hasn't fought in MMA in a year and a half and his last fight was horrendous. He's losing some shine when he should be in his prime and making waves. I'd love to see him do well because he can be super entertaining to watch but he can't afford another fight where he stands around posing and doing nothing followed by a layoff. He's not Anderson Silva.

Silva had fights like that.

It went- great performance again James Irvin= yay, everybody loves him. Shitty performances against Cote and Leites= boo, we hate him. Matrix performance against Griffin= omg, he's the greatest. Lackluster performance against Maia= boo, we hate him again (Dana refuses to place the belt on him afterwards). 4 bad rounds against Sonnen= booooooo come from behind sub in the fifth oh whoops nevermind we're all back in the bandwagon.

MVP is a counter striker. He dances in front of you for the same reason Silva was being an asshole to Maia- he wants to piss you off and get you off your game plan, get you to charge forward with reckless abandon.

He (MVP) may have another fight like the one he had against Gonzalez in his career, but against Caveman it's not likely.

Good post. Both Anderson's and MVPs style is awesome to watch with the right opponent but if the match up doesn't favour the hands down guy it's going to be a house full of boos.

I really hope MVP gets much more active and fights some better competition. I'm a fan and don't want him to fade away before he fights some top guys.

Same. If he has a great fight against Caveman, his next fight could be a main event against Daley. Win that impressively, and he could be in title contention.

I've seen Caveman only once but I liked his fighting style and personality. That could make for a great build up and fight for sure.

not sure what on earth he was trying to do with that fairly recent foray into boxing. "I'll find a hopeless can for an opponent and dance around like a buffoon in front of him for an uncomfortably long, boring period of time before knocking him out unspectacularly. That'll launch my brand into worldwide superstardom!!"

That's actually boxing 101. Most of them crush cans for the first 15-20 fights: build their record and their highlight reel.

So you're saying that no Bellator fighters have to sell tickets?
There was a whole thread where we tried explaining how it works reference that. If you need help with the big words, give me a shout out. Till then, get more creative with your trolling. Rehashing the same shit over and over is boring.

Lol @ you explaining shit. You explained nothing.

MMAHAWK @MMAHAWK tried to explain things, but even he got quiet when FrankieNYC @FrankieNYC and I mentioned how it was bullshit for the #2 MMA promotion in the country to force fighters to sell tickets or have their fights canceled.

Can't speak for him, but I imagine it was less 'got quiet' and more 'eye roll and not wasting anymore of his time'.

Venom Page ain't selling shit and you know it.

Who had their fight cancelled, out of curiosity? List the names of all these guys, who aren't Rory MacDonald, so you aren't watching them anyways, but have decided to become their champion.

Nobody’s ever had their fight cancelled. I’ll let those extra 12 dudes getting to fight on Bellator for $1000 that you would prefer they get $100 to fight at the New Mexico moose club.

Come on man. Bellator could be paying them more and should be paying them more. At the very least, Coker shouldn't make these guys sell tickets, and Bellator definitely shouldn't be threatening fight cancellations (even if they've never actually gone through with it and canceled a fight).

Honestly
Would you prefer they only had 11 fights instead of 18?
Do you think that would be better for the sport?
I don't think it has to come to that. They can have 14 fights and pay the undercard guys decent salaries without forcing them to he ticket vendors.

I get that it happens on the regional circuit. But Bellator isn't the regional circuit.

But their prelims are a regional circuit. There is no other way to explain it. 90% of those fighters travels less then 25 miles to the event. That’s how all their prelims are. They don’t have an LFA or contenders show to get their prospects from . They get them through the regional prelim setup. I don’t necessarily like the idea of selling tickets but I understand why they do it.

They're either a major MMA promotion or a regional circuit. They need to stop trying to be both. They are on national TV. They have the money to pay guys better and not force them to sell tickets.

But they're booking 18 fights so that they can get 10 extra ticket vendors.

And that's bullshit.
