Stick Virginia in there an they’re my favourite states.
No time crossing from US to mexico, but on the way back it can take quite a while unless you have SENTRI pass. It all boils down to the day of the week, time of day, and how many lanes they have open. If you were crossing right now the wait is about an hour at San Ysidro, or 15 minutes if you have SENTRI. There is a website that tells you approximate times and how many lanes are open.

I never cross the border by car. I haven't in 10+ years. The only reason to cross by car is if you're driving south, like Ensenada, rosarito, Valle de guadalupe etc... I don't personally enjoy northern baja, so when I go into mexico I am in guanajuato, jalisco, yukatan, so I go by plane.
