I bought a Vizio sound bar surround system and most of the netflix, amazon prime and HBO GO streaming movies sound like SHIT. Any audiophiles want to school me?

I've never used one, but I think the general consensus within the audiophile community is that they're not that great (at least compared to traditional discrete surround sound systems). That said, what do you mean when you say sounds like crap? Is the sound muffled? Sounds like a tin can? Or just not living up to the expectations you had?

The digital audio output from Netflix and HBO GO should be at least Dolby Digital compatible. If there is a significant degradation of your audio signal, there's a problem somewhere.

did you change the audio settings on your tv to 5.1 surround sound?

do you get 5.1 sound properly when watching blu-rays?

I have no idea what I'm doing. let's just get that out of the way up front.

I have a Vizio flat screen and i bought a sound bar with sub-woofer, bar in the front (obviously) and two satellite speakers. Most movies and audio through the Roku sound distorted on the low end. Blu-Rays sound perfect, record player sounds perfect, it's anything streaming through the Roku, Pandora sounds distorted, etc. Adjusted the subwoofer, surround or bass doesn't resolve it. I'm wondering if the sound is low bit rate, like 128. I don't know how to address this, though. i feel like it could be a setting somewhere in the Roku?

Vizio should have a television menu settings for picture/colour/contrast/audio kind of thing like all tvs.

if you go into the audio settings check to see if changing the audio settings makes a difference. maybe that could help.

it might be at the default 2 channel audio and you may have to set it to dolby digital 5.1.

OK, I was wrong, my lovely wife bought an Insignia TV- audio settings have one option I can see that might help:
Digital Audio/SPDIF and then I can select RAW or PCM or OFF.

in my experience soundbars sound like crap in larger rooms. I think they are a good option for smaller rooms.

you should check the manual that came with your tv or download the manual as a PDF from their website for your exact tv.

Product Support | Insignia

it should describe how to set up a stereo sound system with the cables, and what tv menu item to change in the audio section.
