Every year towards the end of June an amateur mixed martial arts event is held at the Del Mar Fairgrounds down here in San Diego and put on by Roy Englebrecht Promotions. The event is free to fair attendees and exposes a wide variety of locals to live mma.
This year they changed the format up a bit. They held 3 mma fights at Noon, 2 mma fights and a sub only match at 1:30, 2 mma fights and a sub only match at 3:00, and 3 final mma fights at 4:30. The sub only matches were under a Metamoris style system where after 5 minutes if there is no finish the match ends in a draw. The event ends up being an interesting format since the venue is outdoors and in an open area near the entrance to the fair so a number of people cycle in and out throughout the day.
While you will hear large numbers of people in the crowd talk about the fair showing "UFC fights" or yelling "sweep the leg" there are also a large numbers of fighters and practitioners from local gyms in attendance. The notable teams this year included fighters from 10th Planet satellite schools like The Freakshow in Oceanside, Team Quest fighters being cornered by Sam Alvey who has become a staple of these events, and a fighter from Team Hurricane Awesome cornered by former Bantamweight title contender Liz Carmouche. Chris Leben was also working at the event as one of the head referees.
The homie @No 1 Boolshit Guy and I were in attendance I've included some of the photos he took below:
