Former UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo came close to headlining the upcoming Fight Night card scheduled for Sept. 22 in Brazil.

Speaking with the media in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday, Aldo said he was offered a lightweight bout with Donald Cerrone in the main event of UFC Sao Paulo after Glover Teixeira pulled out of a fight with Jimi Manuwa, but his team eventually declined the offer on short notice.

I'm curious to see how Aldo can do at lightweight. I know he has had tough cuts in the past, and has been visibly gassed in some fights (think vs. Hominick). No idea how much of that is really related to the cut, but I know that was the speculation at the time.

Cerrone would have been a fun fight, too bad that didn't get signed. And Pettis too.

I've never understood some of the hate Aldo got, I've liked watching him fight since he debuted in WEC (WEC was the shit!). He had an incredible title reign. He seemed to have some of the same struggles as GSP when he was deep into his reign. He'll never get back those losses to Max or Conor, but I was happy to see him get the win over Stephens. I wasn't sure he still had it in him for that one. I like the idea of 155 for him, there are some fun matchups.

Cerrone fight would've been stupid.

I'd like to see Aldo straight in there with a contender such as Kevin Lee. Let's find out if he is going to be a serious player straight away.

David Teymur called out Aldo. Mabe thats a reasonable level of competition if he wants a fight soon.

Break him in a lightweight with a solid fight, but a winnable test like Pettis. It's the 'superfight' that never happened in 2014. Would still be fun to watch today.
