All surface warships, including every other countries, are extremely easy to track. I'm saying that mildly.

The ships from NATO are a bit tougher but depending on ocean conditions it wouldn't be uncommomn to pick them up at 30,000+ yards.

Once you pick up a destroyer, no masking agent will take away the tonals we receive initially. Once its locked in, its pretty much a done deal unless the ship goes into our baffle region.

I've never actually heard of the prairie system unless its post 2008.
Can you really hear someone on another sub fart if you are locked onto them?

LA class sub's are the smaller ones that carry conventional war heads like torpedoes, tomahawk cruise missiles and mines

We're used to do the Intel ops that are close to our potential enemies shores and we also follow other countries nuke missile sub's to sink them if they open the missile door hatches.

Its been said they do a lot of spying ops as well.
So if they open the nuke door you guys would take that bitch out, no questions asked?

I kind of put that the wrong way. We used to monitor other hostile countries excersises and there was always good Intel coming to us about them.

If we were watching those, obviously we wouldn't attack the sub.

The situations I'm talking about is ballistic missile sub's on patrol in their "box"

Its almost like a "crimson tide" situation but nowadays I don't think we would launch a torpedo unless it was confirmed that the missile was away and headed towards the U.S

(Which would be way too late)

Its a dangerous game you play. The enemy could also be opening the missile hatches for maintenance although highly unlikely.

What kind of weird stuff?
Saw one of my shipmates bang a tranny.

We were on the 3rd floor balcony smoking and he was on the 5th banging a tranny in a miniskirt doggy style.

We all saw the balls swinging around.

His last name was Belgrod and we all called him "back door belgrod" after that.

He refused to believe that he did a tranny but we all saw the evidence

Ever go to the Viking club in Guam?
I have although it was a blurry night for me. I think I remember a stripper telling my captain to pull his pants down and spanked him with a belt lol.

He actually pulled a couple of us off to the side the next day and gave us a "direct order" not too mention it again lol

I don't really remember much of anything about Guam except it was hot as hell. We pulled into Agana. I had duty the first night and slipped out on liberty at like 8pm the next night and proceeded to get trashed.

We left the next day and think we pulled into Saipan after that

I knew a different sub guy and he got a HUGE resigning bonus while in HI. Him and a friend decided to blow it all in one week. They rented the presidential suite and lived the high life. He said he had zero regrets. He ended up meeting his wife there too. She's very cute too. Downside was he was on the sub that killed the Japanese fishermen. It fucked him up.

Did a thread like this a few years ago on another site and it turned out well.

A few threads on here had me feeling some nostalgia about the old days so I thought WTH? may as well do it again.

Background: I was a Sonar Technician on 2 different LA class fast attack submarines.

Did a tour in Bangor, Washington working on Sonar systems on Trident sub's( Nuke missile subs) never went to sea on a trident though.

Ask away and I'll answer all that I can except some that I can't for obvious reasons.
I remember that thread. It was awesome.

Hopefully this is not classified: you ever tracked other subs? Soviets? NATO? How did it go?

Have you ever realized that you were tracked by another sub?

I have tracked other subs. Mainly it was U.S subs and NATO subs in exercises.

I don't think I can say what exact countries they belonged too but I have also tracked Russian made non NATO subs.

There's countries in Asia, and the middle East that operate Russian made sub's too.

There's been times where we found out we were being tracked but only in exercises where we were told exactly how fast to go and in which box to operate.

Basically "OK we finally picked you up. Onto the next exercise" type thing. Sometimes they would blast us with active sonar to let us know we got picked up.

Thx man!
I read a few months ago that during a nato exercise a French sub playing the enemy managed to get close an aircraft carrier group and managed to 'sink' a few ships. Did you hear about that? What did you think? I understand there's technology involved but It seems that there's also a certain 'skill/tactical ' aspect to sub warfare. And how would you rate other nations subs? Thanks for the great thread.

1) did you have any close calls while at sea? like breaking your neck falling down some steep stairs or the like?

2) what made you join the navy?

3) what was the most unexpected thing you saw or learned from being in the navy?

So how much time do you have on the clock underwater in a sub, and are there health issues on the long term when diving in a sub for a longer period.
