I'm ok with this. As a Tate fan, I like her chances against Nunes better than her chances against Rousey, though it won't be easy.

Fights are more fun when they are competitive and you are on the edge of your seat waiting to see who pulls off the win.

Rousey has the same problem as Cyborg. She is just too dominant and there is no one competitive to fight. People don't tune in to these fights to watch a great battle. They tune in because there is still a Buster Douglas chance for the underdog to win.

Holm loses btw.

I'm torn here because I almost always want to see a new match over a kneejerk rematch, assuming the original match wasn't controversial or spectacular. But in this case I'd much much rather see Rousey v. Zingano II (or maybe I should say Rousey v. Zingano 1 1/2).

Poor Holm, on the poster. "Yeah, it's me...I guess?"

I have no reason to believe Tate ever beats Rousey in 100 rematches, so I'm more than good with someone else getting a kick at the can. In all seriousness, I wonder what would have to happen for her to fight a guy.

I agree, but who else is she going to fight?
She doesn't have to fight anyone right away. Let her go off and make movies, and in the meantime have a women's 135 lb tournament/TUF to see who her next opponent will be. If they can convince Cyborg to be a part of that, then all the better.

This is a good idea, they never seem to have her take any time off though.

Holly Holm has zero business being in the cage with Rousey. She would get fucking destroyed by any of the other top contenders. Savage, one-sided chick vs. chick beatdowns. Holm wouldn't get out of the first round with Meisha, Julianna, McMann, Kaufman, Nunes... SHEEIT. I just checked the UFC's website and Holm is in the top ten. Get the fuck outta hea, Dana.

I mean, I get it: Push the blonde TNA into a title fight before she gets exposed. But still, this would be two squash matches in a row. Ronda is already smashing real contenders, why feed her a tomato (tomata?) can? Cause let's not kid around, Holm is a MMA joke.

just waking up, drink coffee #1, didnt see this thread, so I'll just CnP what I wrote in the other one...

"I agree with most of whats been posted previously, just to add 2¢...

Holms transition to mma has looked stiff, shes a quintessential example of boxer->mma, and it hasn't looked good. yet. and maybe never. but... there's a maybe.

we can skip most discussion about RR, what she's good at, where she can flatten most opponents: walk forward, hand trap to clich, and it's really over by then. And simply, intimidation factor. Most of her fights are won before she steps in the cage.

What she hasn't faced is an actually good boxer. Tate is the closest we've seen to a "quality striker", and given us her longest fight(s). (McMann actually takes second, but its... 3 secs longer than Tates shorter fight? aaanyway) ((I am totally not a stats person, I am just guessing here, but I'll go look that up, so I don't look like as asshole...)) {{ Sorry, it was Carmouche}}

Holm has that toolset. A distance fighter, a bit (hehe ;)) reluctant to engage in the clinch, and most importantly, can work angles. At least potentially. This has been a key that Tate used, along with a jab, to disrupt RRs "catch and kill" successful strategy. Because, if we're being honest, RRs standup is... "not great". Yeah, she KO'ed Bethe, but it wasn't pretty, and the intimidation factor was a big part of it. (Do you see the look of fear on Bethes face as she was backing up? Again, that fight was over before it started.)

I have high hopes for Holm, I tend to think that a basic boxing skillset is often anemic in mma fighters, and it could really serve her well if she rounds out that skillset, but she is no where near ready to be fighting RR, sadly.

/rant"

all that being said, im actually surprised at the stupidity of this matchup. so shortsighted. "take great potential, throw it away because... why?"
Holm does not have good boxing.

Maybe Holm can rise to the skill set of Rousey. Sure she hasn't been that exciting but she completely shuts down chicks. I wish she got a few more fights under her belt first but oh well it's still a good fight to me.

I always wonder if Ronda's opponents are not only psyched out-- understandably-- but then get in there and realise just how goddamn strong Ronda is. Like, by feel. You can train for technique, you can build psychological defence, you can believe with all you are that you're the best, it's your time, whatever mantra it takes but when you get in there and compare raw power to raw power...I dunno, man. I don't think Holm is that woman.

I think Chael Sonnen had that exact scenario when he fought Jon Jones. As soon as I read your post I remembered this interview in the lead up to Cormier v Jones:

"I think they are pretty close and I think people are missing the boat on that. If you are going to throw them in a weight room Daniel is going to make him look like a kid, but Jon Jones with that height, has incredible leverage. I was always a very strong guy compared to other athletes and I took that real serious from the time I was about 12 years old. I really enjoyed lifting weights and trying to get stronger and I did. And when I got in there with Jones -- forget what the scale says that we both weigh the same thing -- he was huge. I mean he was the biggest man I ever fought. I may have outweighed him on fight night I have no idea. But his height and his leverage, I couldn't even deal with it. He pushed me into the fence like I was a kid. And I couldn't figure out how to circle off and then the next thing he is coming with that spinning elbow. He is just a lot to deal with and with that leverage his strength is incredible"

If they are going to give Holm this fight why not just do a superfight vs tonya evinger.why even bother with a number one contender match if it doesn't mean anything.id love to see tate get pissed and peace out to Bellator to fight marloes

I'm kind of disappointed Tate won't be getting her smug ass kicked again, but a fresh matchup is better than nothing at all. Holm is going to lose in under a minute though.

Tate's already had twice as many Rousey fights as everyone else. She's cut off.

Yes! That must be so-- "demoralising" isn't the word. More like "devastating." And then primal terror takes over, or at least it's one more thing you have to fight.

I love these insights, and Chael is particularly gifted at offering them. I wish he wouldn't dox people though.
