So, just throwing this out there: maybe Reebok is regretting getting involved in MMA in general? They’re stuck with the UFC for another 18 months at least, but if they have individual deal that expire before that, there’s little point in renewing those if they know the UFC deals already going to die.
They got into the UFC thinking that they had the rights to an entire sport that was fast growing and had an international audience. This wasn’t wrong. They also probably thought they were getting a bargain at just $11 million a year, because on paper they very much were. Hell, most jerseys could be print-to-order off their website ala Cafe Press, saves time and gives maximum flexibilty on options!
However, they exactly the reaction from fighters and fans you’d expect when they offered a piss poor product that homogenized fighters and fighters ended up seeing their incomes slashed, some by over $100k a year in what is not the most lucrative sport to begin with. Fighters actively revolted, fans’ reactions ranged from “this is kind of bland” to “fuck off and die.” Mainstream journalists who knew little about MMA were openly baffled at UFC 200 why everyone wore the same shorts. Worse yet, they’ve clearly had piss poor sales from the way products have been pulled from retail shelves and they’ve stopped updating their gear.
Reebok is probably preparing to get out. I doubt PVZ is the only one who’s seen their deal cancelled, she’s just been public about it.
