So far, the punishments have been handed out against the people who were in charge.

But what about the players? I'm not hearing too much about the guys who deliberately cheated during games. Knowing what pitch is coming seconds before the ball is thrown is a HUGE advantage.

Is this where they read the catchers hand signals? Yeah maybe stop doing that. Be like if they had someone in the end zone signalling to the QB who to pass to. Ofc ppl r gona try to see it. Just throw your pitch. Why the catcher have to be involved?

The Astros watched the game on a live feed monitor and when they saw an off speed pitch was called for by the catcher, someone would bang a garbage can so the batter could hear it and know what was coming.

No bang - fast ball
Bang - off speed

>>10 game - lifetime ban, depending on involvement.

Astros owner should have lost franchise and World Series should be forfeit..

it was more than that. Catchers update their sign strings with the pitcher between innings...sometimes between pitches. That kind of sign-stealing is just part of the game, like when a runner is on 2nd base.
What the Astros did was setup cameras to video the signs from center field, and then analyzed the signs in real time to decipher the sign strings - then they called down to the dugout to signal pitches. They were cheating.

It’s shady but I don’t see how I can hold the players that accountable.
What are they supposed to do? Throw their coaches and franchise under the bus mid season. I’m ok with a small suspension but coaches should get lifetime ban.

If you want to stop something, you must make the punishment harsh.
If burglary came with a death sentence, I'm pretty sure we'd have a 90% drop rate, with 5% being mentally ill or illiterate & 4% having life threatening disease.

Pete Rose got a lifetime ban for betting on his team to win. A manager is supposed to try to win anyway, so you can make the argument that his transgressions didn't change the outcome of games.

These guys 100% changed games by cheating.
And they won the fucking World Series in the process.

I say they should all get 10 games at minimum. If the Astros and Red Sox have to bring up a bunch of AA players to complete those games so be it. They cheated - they should pay the price. And it should leave a mark.

From all accounts, it was a player-driven scam. The managers and coaches are being punished for letting it happen.

Thanks. I don't rly have a problem w it. Does the catcher rly need to call pitches? Can't the pitcher throw what he wants?

Haha. No.
The catcher would have little chance to catch the ball if he didn't know what was coming. It's comical when a catcher gets "crossed up" on a pitch (expecting fastball, gets a slider or curve ot vice versa) - the ball typically ends up at the backstop.

Major league pitchers throw hard, and their pitches have crazy movement.

it's the pitcher that's calling the pitches. The catcher is running through signs, based on how they decided to pitch this batter. When the pitcher sees the sign for the pitch he wants, he starts his delivery and the catcher sets up for the pitch.

i was our little league catcher, for no reason other than I was willing to be a human backstop...learning to catch is basically just squatting down and taking abuse.

now read that last phrase in a flagrant and flaming voice.

Not always the case
Catcher or coaches call the pitches and the pitcher can shake off a pitch he doesn’t like.
That’s why they say a catcher called a great game

Not necessarily.
A good catcher calls the game. A pitcher can shake him off so they do have the final say, but if a catcher is calling a good game you will rarely see a shake off.

And some of those shake offs are meant to deceive. I always laugh when a pitcher only has 2 pitches and he shakes the catcher off 3 times.

There's a hilarious scene in Bull Durham when Nuke shakes off Crash. "When you speak of me...speak well."

I was both a pitcher and a catcher throughout my entire baseball career. No homo. I also played short and 3rd.

we're saying the same thing. The pitcher decides how to pitch the guy, the catcher puts down what he thinks the pitcher wants.

a catcher calling a great game means he was in mind-meld with the pitcher.
that's why when you see a guy like Kerry Wood come up from the minors, and in his 5th game with a backup catcher throw 20 Ks against the most dominant hitting team in baseball that year...well, that just defies hyperbole.

I loved playing catcher. In more advanced leagues, catchers are typically the smartest player on the field. There's a reason so many managers are former catchers.

Plus every now and then you got to get in a collision. I fucking loved plays at the plate.

in Little League, was 1st baseman that called the infield - that's why I moved. My dad was the coach, and a former all-state/Minor League catcher, LoL.

best part of catcher was talking shit to the batters...especially as we got older.
