Would you take the first 2 levels of the Somm exam just for the fun and edification of it, even if you are not in the food and wine industry?

Or do you see that as a waste, and figure just study on your own, who cares about a cert or a pin?

Evaluator- Okay, for your final exam, I’d like you to try these two wines.
TMMAC Millenial- [sips wine] Oh. I like this wine very much. It’s full bodied. I’m getting notes of oak, cherry, and ass.
[sips other wine] Oh I like this as well. Crisp with a nice finish. I’m getting smoke, vanilla, and ass.
Evaluator- I’m sorry. There is no ass in either of those wines.
TMMAC Millenial- Are you sure? I’m definitely tasting ass.

I couldn't find one with wine. However somms do need to know other alcohols a bit as well.

Maybe if I made a thread on ass beer we'ld have 18 pages.

See that pub.

I used to go to that pub.

That was the Winchester on

Archway road.

Of course for filmic reasons that pub he is in on the gif isn't the Winchester but that is what it's based on. That and the buggaloo just up the road.

I never saw him but used to have an early pint with Nick Frost on occasion before he was famous.

That's a cool story....and it may have inspired me to start a thread "American Bars vs British Pubs".
That should make for a lively debate, lol.

Queer as Folk. It was ace. Don't take the piss, it was one of my favourite all time shows. Showtime remade it and it was actually pretty good.

We share the same birthday.

I'm very impressed with people that have sophisticated pallets and could taste the difference and wines and alcohols. Same with people with a great ear that can hear a tune and play it suddenly.

I have a pretty good math and science brain but this other stuff is so far removed from my skill set and natural ability. It's like a superpower.

Can somebody be trained to have a highly sophisticated palette? I know the somms study a lot in that part is memory. But do I need a naturally gifted palette just to have a chance? I don't know but it's still pretty amazing

I liked Green st, but remember a lot of Brits at the time saying his accent was shit, thinking he was American or something else.
His accent in Sons of Anarchy was odd too.
After Guy Ritchie's King Arthur tanked we haven't heard much from him at all.

I live in wine country, right? I drink a lot of run of the mill wine but I can get on board with wine tasting weekends and can tell the difference between wines. I know that a pinotage has chocolate notes, I know to stay away from 99% of Chardonnay etc.

A year or so ago I went to Marcus warings flagship restaurant in Mayfair. It was our anniversary.

We opted for the tasting menu which was nine courses. I also chose the wine for each course.

I was always the guy that says fuck off to the sommelier but I have to say it was quite amazing how the nine different wines added to the taste of the food.

I was a sceptic and uses the. ABV to price rule.

But it is true. There is a reasoning behind this

Cost me £500 to find this out mind

I think in some ways it's like sports or music, some people are just gifted and will excel with some work, some can train hard and be very good, some just decent, and some hopeless.

I didn't get the whole terroir discussion until I tried a wine from my home state. Growing up as a kid there, getting in the mud, grass, bushes, etc...when I opened the bottle and smelled the wine it just took be back and it finally clicked.

I'm amazed by the tops somms that can analyze it down to the year, region,etc..
