Also, why the hell would you hire someone that got fired under the previous administration? Either, Mattis resigned and Trump looks weak, or Trump fired him and Trump admits he made a mistake in hiring him in the first place. No matter which way you look at this, Trump comes out badly.
A far better way to have tackled this would have been to say "I'm glad he resigned, if he doesn't agree with what we are doing then he was right to leave. I will continue to make this country as great as possible, and don't have time for people who disagree with me."
But Trump is too petty and thin-skinned to do something like that.
