The Roots of Elevation:

Elevation Fight Team in Denver has been around for more than two years, but just recently the spotlight fell on the mixed martial arts team after UFC bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw joined them following his departure from Team Alpha Male in Sacramento.

While Dillashaw, along with UFC veterans Matt Brown and Clay Guida, are new additions to the team, the coaches at Elevation, including retired UFC fighter Eliot Marshall as well as Leister Bowling and striking coach Christian Allen, have been working together for quite some time.

Elevation has already been the home to fighters such as Neil Magny,Brandon Thatch and Cat Zingano, but now the team is multiplying in much greater numbers with several top-ranked fighters prepared to move to the Denver-based team.

Marshall says part of the success and growth of the team comes from the coaches, who are there solely to support the fighters as they train and prepare for upcoming bouts.

"All of sudden this all started coming together," Marshall said when speaking to FOX Sports. "It's not just recently but it's how we run the team and how we as the coaches kind of work together and the guys are great. The fighters come in, work hard and listen. It's just kind of going to be that way with coaching.

"It's going to be guys who were athletes and were fighters that moved on. The main coaches at Elevation are me, Leister Bowling, Christian Allen on the martial arts side and we have Loren Landow as our strength and conditioning coach. We were all athletes. So we understand what that side is like and we're just really focused on them."

We've got Neil Magny, Brandon Thatch, Tony Sims, Drew Dober, Clay Guida and Matt Brown showed up this week and they're doing their camps here," Marshall revealed. "He's not moving out here but he's going to do like every other week and we're working out the schedule and I'm coaching Donald 'Cowboy' (Cerrone) for his fight against (Rafael) dos Anjos. Obviously, TJ's moving out here."

Actually, Elevation will lead three UFC main events between now and January with Brown set to face Kelvin Gastelum in a headliner on Nov. 21 before Cerrone faces dos Anjos in December and then Dillashaw defends his title on Jan. 17 against former champion Dominick Cruz.

Obviously, it cranks up the pressure on the coaches at Elevation to deliver, but Marshall is excited about the next few months and what it could mean to the future of the team.

"We're going to be involved in two title fights and another main event. Not a bad time to be here at all," Marshall said.

Urijah Faber talks bathroom disaster, fighting T.J. Dillashaw and Chad Mendes' broken foot at UFC 189

Morning Report: Urijah Faber talks bathroom disaster, fighting T.J. Dillashaw and Chad Mendes' broken foot at UFC 189 - MMA Fighting

With the high-profile exit of UFC bantamweight champion T.J. Dillashaw leaving Team Alpha Male to join Colorado's Elevation Fight Team, Faber says he'd have no choice but to accept a booking with his former protege.

"Yea, you know, that all took me by surprise," said Faber. "This was all along the same week when 'The Crapping' happened so it is what it is. At this point, I don't really have a reason not to fight him other than that we've been friends for a long time. Before, it was 'We're on the same team.' We're not, now. I've got to say 'Yes' to it at this point.

"It was kind of similar to the drunken poop lady. It took me by surprise. We had lunch and he mentioned it, that he was getting paid to go somewhere else and I'm like, 'Oh, alright.'"

Faber also had some praise for UFC interim featherweight champ Conor McGregor. Faber spent six weeks coaching opposite McGregor on 'TUF 22,' just after the Irishman scored a TKO over Team Alpha Male's Chad Mendes at UFC 189 in July.

"[Mendes] trained for two weeks," Faber said of Mendes' abbreviated training camp. "He also broke his foot five days into that two weeks. Then he broke his thumb a minute and a half [into the fight]. It wasn't a fair showing, but Conor is good. He's real good. The stand up, especially. He's big for the weight class. I think we saw his grappling isn't the greatest, but he can take a beating.

"He's got that big old melon head. He took a beating and he's got that championship mentality. He's a tough guy. His ground game, I saw some holes, for sure, but he's deserving of what he's got. That's for sure."

We should rename that instance 'The Crappening'.

McGregor told Faber that his teammate and current bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw was a disloyal "snake in the grass," and that he should have never brought him in to Team Alpha Male.

"He is a twerp," McGregor said. "You shouldn’t let him into your sh*t, because he is a snake in the grass and I told you that to your face. You brought him into TUF thinking he would help you. He was there to help him. He’s a snake in the grass and you need to figure that out."

"Yeah, pretty crazy," he said. "It was just timing…timing’s everything I guess on that, and it all happened at the time when Conor called us out. It’s actually kind of ridiculous for him to call me a ‘snake’ or a ‘traitor,’ when the fact is I made a business decision. I feel like that’s…that’s like Conor saying it’s making business decisions, it’s all about business, it’s the fight business.

"I’m getting told I’m a snake because I make a business decision for my career. That’s just pretty hypocritical, it’s very hypocritical to me when other people believe what he says."

Dillashaw said one of the big reasons for the switch was that TAM didn’t have coaches.

Dillashaw also pointed out the double standard in play for McGregor to make the ‘snake in the grass’ claim to begin with.

"If I’m a traitor, I feel like [McGregor]’s an even bigger traitor to his country," he said. "He went to Ireland, and he’s a big country man, and then he lives in the United States now. He moved to Las Vegas. Why? It’s better for his career. It’s business. And so, I put it so everyone understands, I’m just trying to stay on top and I want to become the best MMA fighter possible and I need coaches to do so. Right now in Sacramento, I’m teaching kickboxing classes, Martin Kampmann’s moving home. He was a great mitt-man and a boxing coach, but he’s a boxing coach. We have to coach each other at Team Alpha Male right now, and that’s a big problem for me."

Dillashaw said he is coming to grips with the hate.

"Ultimately, it was a business decision," he said. "I’m going to have these haters out there, but haters are gonna hate."

Really, TJ ought to just keep quiet. He sucks at trash talk, and all he's going to do is get embarrassed by Conor.

TAM BJJ coach forecasts Urijah Faber vs. T.J. Dillashaw

T.J., who now trains full-time at Elevation Fight Team with Duane Ludwig, claims that TAM have banned him from visiting the gym. Faber says he's playing the victim.

In what could potentially have the makings of another Jon Jones vs. Rashad Evansrivalry, Alpha Male BJJ coach Fabio Prado thinks the UFC have an amazing opportunity to promote a grudge match between the former teammates.

"I don't see the UFC losing that amazing opportunity to use all this hype to promote such a great clash of champions," Prado said to Sherdog yesterday. "Faber didn't want that fight in the past, but now he feels comfortable facing him."

"Pateta" understands Dillashaw's reasons for leaving and thinks that the California-based team will produce more great champions like T.J. in the future.

"Dillashaw left because a new team in Colorado offered him a good salary to train there and be part of the team," Prado said. "I understand his point and I can't criticize that, but what I can say is that we have at least 10 talents like him at Team Alpha Male. There are not only fighters here, but great trainers. I'm sure we'll produce another champion soon."

Dillashaw is currently scheduled to defend his bantamweight title against former champion Dominick Cruz at UFC Fight Night 81 on January 17th in Boston, Massachusetts, while Urijah Faber recently moved back up the featherweight division and lost against Frankie Edgar in unanimous decision.
