UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier met with promotion officials over the weekend to discuss various things, including a rematch with Jon Jones and possibly fighting in New York. A new eight-fight deal with the UFC was signed during the meeting, as well, DC told MMAjunkie Radio on Monday.

During the interview, Cormier said he didn't have to "play the game" during negotiations, and the UFC was generous enough to give him the deal he requested.

"I was like, 'This is what I feel like we deserve as a guy that's done everything he's supposed to and carried himself like a professional athlete should carry himself,' and they said, 'You know what, you're right,' and they pretty much just gave it to me, which is awesome."

Cormier told the radio station he doesn't necessarily believe he'll complete all eight fights on the newly signed contract because he's already 36-years old. DC got into the sport many years later than most fighters. After a wrestling career, he made his MMA debut at age 30 in the now-defunct Strikeforce organization.

"I don't even know if I can get through eight fights," he said.

I expect the ufc to try and lockdown all of their best stars just to keep them off the market, it started with mendes and will continue for almost all of the top 10 in each division. I still think 50% will still test the market though.

Cormier often seems more concerned with his post-UFC career than he does fighting, which is not good when the elephant in the room is Jon Jones. If you have to sign an eight fight deal at the age of 36 to get all the things you want from the UFC, then you shouldn't be gloating about not having to negotiate after.

I do hope it was his idea for 8 fights, but it sounds like it wasn't.

Is this the UFC making sure he's locked in for life, I personally think so.

Maytbe he will go back to HW to have some fights after Bones beats him again.

I will never understand signing extensions and not testing market value, if you think you have actual value.

As champion I think there is a clause which extends your contract one more fight after each title defense. Additionally, despite the ufc being shitty to many fighters, they have been pretty good to him. If he tests the market, he would most likely lose his broadcaster job, which imo is what he will be laying back on after retirement.
