Did you hear a rattle?

Like seriously, what the fuck is happening in Texas?
Baby rattlers are still developing their rattle thus they cannot give that distinctive warning sound.

Plus those copy cat A-hole Gopher Snakes try to mimic the sound in brush and leaves but this fker was in my living room.

So from a far its a toss up as to what it is.

I've been in the situation before with a baby rattler in hallway before.

Used my keen reflexes to capture and release them both the same way. I takes no chances.

Well. They're here. FML.
I've seen their holes so I knew it was coming, but this morning I found the first cicada exoskeleton. They are out.

For 17 years they've been underground, and somehow they all know to come out this year. Millions of them. Not looking forward to this.

I remember in 2004 there were car accidents from tires sliding on the bug guts.

I've mentioned finding eggs in the gardening thread, but now I've found a caterpillar.

Giant Swallowtail, the largest butterfly in North America. Not bird shit, just an evolutionary adaptation to look like bird shit:

Besides resembling bird shit, they're really good at concealment. This fucker either completely or partially ate 6 or 7 leaves on my lemon tree before I found him today when spraying the leaves for spider mites.

Not endangered though, so now he's dead.

The birds are feasting on these motherfuckers.

Apparently that's why these things are in 17 year cycles. They come out at the same time in such great numbers that their predators literally eat their full and enough of them survive to mate and head underground for another 17 years.

foot and a half probably if it was stretching out
good soil right there I bet
Funnily enough this is a junk pile I have out in the corner of the yard. I’ve been ripping out a limestone patio and some dirt, and this is where I’ve been dumping until I can get rid of it. I always relocate to our gardens, figure they’ll do some good there.

No rain here sir
Lucky. We had 4 rain days this week, couple of pretty heavy rain days too. It’s really fucking up my mountain biking schedule lol, the trails are wrecked. Plus the limestone is slick as shit when wet, and all the creeks are flooded so a lot of crossings are out.

the springs are flowing good though

Take a forstner or a spade bit and drill a shallow hole in a hunk of cedar. About 3/4" deep.

Scoop up the shavings and put them back in the hole.

Pour some tiki fuel in there and light it.

The smoke helps keep the bugs away and the cedar smells good. The actual solid wood just chars a bit - it doesn't catch on fire because there isn't enough oxygen.
