I still think Garbrandt is like that movie The Prestige, where Christian Bale is two twins who live their life as the same person.

Bale's sacrifice was each twin had to pretend to love the other wife/mistress, the Garbrandt twins' sacrifice is having to get matching shit neck tattoos.
