The Cicada carnage is everywhere.

Found this ant attempting to transport a severed head over my airhose.

Baby rattlers are still developing their rattle thus they cannot give that distinctive warning sound.

Plus those copy cat A-hole Gopher Snakes try to mimic the sound in brush and leaves but this fker was in my living room.

So from a far its a toss up as to what it is.

I've been in the situation before with a baby rattler in hallway before.

Used my keen reflexes to capture and release them both the same way. I takes no chances.
I'll add a side note here - they don't always rattle, adult or baby. I see it quite a bit actually. They'll still coil up and be ready to strike, but won't always rattle or give warning. I'd much rather they always rattled so I know to back the fuck up. Now if they are coiled up ready to go, and you provoke them, you can get them to rattle. But sometimes they just sit there and eyeball fuck you without making a sound, sort of daring you to come closer. I have also heard that baby rattlers can be more dangerous because they are still learning to issue their venom. More likely to dump the whole load, whereas an adult knows how to issue the right amount for the job and overdoing it would be a waste of resources.

I have heard some say that the not rattling is some sort of protective adaptation, because they have critters like wild pigs that eat them. When they rattle they give up their location. No idea if this is true, and among the biologists I work with there are differing opinions on whether this is actually the case. All I know is that I have seen a lot rattle, but also a lot not.

Rattlers love to hang out in the caves we frequent. I used to carry a box of M1000s in my field bag, and I'd drop one down the entrance before we entered. That would definitely get them to rattle if one or more were present ;)

LOL I just pissed off some of my California buddies

Got invited to "The River" for the Holiday weekend by some friends
of mine. I said yes until I googled the camp area and "river"

Californian's actually call this shit a river and nature area. LOL

If I want to sit in an overcrowded bathtub I can do that at home
and without driving 75 miles

Was smack dab in the middle of my living room.

If you are from the southern US you can see it looks like a baby rattlesnake colors are similar but that lil fker is actually a Gopher Snake.

I caught the bastard in a metal bucket and chucked em. Harmless but still a Cunt.
Mojave rattlers all over the trails here when I go running.

Hate the lil bastards

Had my headphones on and almost stepped right on this lil fucker and I had
been jogging for a good 30 minutes so my heart rate was way up. No way I would
have made it back to town

The article makes sense to me. That’s one of those things I’ve heard repeated a lot over the last 20 years, but I could easily see how that’s just some incorrect information that was ran with.

kind of the same thing with what I mentioned about some rattlers not making noise as a protective measure from pigs or whatever. Some claim that’s the case, but other biologists I know say it’s complete bullshit.

Their articles are great. I'd strongly recommend that anyone who enjoys or spend time outdoors "Like" their Facebook page.

I’m one of those curmudgeons that hasn’t ever had a FB or any other social media. But I am clicking around their website now from the link you posted. Gave me something to do while I make pancakes ?

They have a newsletter also. Send out an email once a week or whatever. Same things will be there, just a little bit behind.

Why is California so gross.
Because there is no decent nature here. People think fishing is
paying $200 for some over crowded lake stocked with organic
trout sprinkled with rainforest drops

I have to drive across half the state to find a decent place to kayak
and when you get there its an overcrowded dump
