Are you a sociopath?
The fuck you shooting bunny rabbits for?
Are you serious?

I'm an Australian who now lives in New Zealand. Ask anyone who lives rural in either of those countries what they think about cute little introduced bunnies.

What does any of that have to do with Uranium?
I asked you what the gun was for. You said that it was a learning tool. Okay, well, a lump of radioactive uranium is a learning tool as well. They used to sell them in kid's science playsets, in fact.

"Tools aren't for playing, Toys aren't for work."

Okay - what "work" does your daughter's rifle help her with?

I mean, I guess she probably shoots targets with it, right? But that's not work, that's recreation.

We do have guns actually, the number of guns per capita here is equivalent to Canada or Scandinavia, which is about as high as it gets in the first world. Rabbits are destructive introduced pests, and both the Australian and New Zealand governments have and continue to try to rid the country of them, with wide public support. ?

Oh, you are right, my mistake. I still find it easy to mix posters up since I haven't been here long. (I'm also at work, so quite often getting distracted.) Apologies. ?

This is 99% the reason I own guns
See, I can easily respect an American just being honest about it. I'd have guns myself, if I had a lot more money. I used to live with a mate who had half a dozen semi-autos, and I grew up with a couple of shotguns in the house. But it's not anywhere near the top of the list of my priories to spend money on. Especially since I'd have to buy a safe for them, and I don't live in the country so I wouldn't get out to use them enough.

Rabbits can fuck off. The government here is trying to kill all of them via shooting, poisoning, fumigation of their burrows, and introducing a virus to kill them. And rightly so.

Think that's bad? In Australia, the government sponsors the culling of about 3 million adult wild kangaroos every year.

What, the rabbits? They're an introduced species. The British colonists brought them over for something to shoot at, and they have no natural predators here so they breed like..... well, like rabbits. Ecologically, they are a disaster. Almost as bad as possums, which are also widely culled.

Sound like our Texas hogs.

People in the midwest shoot coyotes to thin the herd. That's about it.

Yeah, I think Florida has a bunch of introduced species that are taking over the swamps as well. It's a lot like your feral hogs I think, but more so. New Zealand and Australia are so fucking isolated that non-native species are a huge problem. Rabbits and possums for New Zealand, rabbits, mice and cane toads for Australia.

How big a problem are rabbits in Australia?

Well, in 1860, an English colonist named Thomas Austin brought 24 of them over, to release into the wild for hunting.

That was 1860.

In 1907, construction of the rabbit-proof fence was completed. It's over 2,000 miles long. That's how big a problem rabbits are in Australia.

Also have huge problems with mice and cane toads.

I mean, we have our natural defences as well of course, but they can only do so much.

Well, I asked you what the reason she has it is - what purpose does it serve?

You said that it's a learning tool. Okay - well, you can make that claim for essentially anything.

Why does she have it? Because she wanted it, and worked to earn it. What was her mindset behind spending that money - what was the appeal of buying a gun?

I understand that these are not easy questions to answer honestly if you don't want to say "because guns are cool and fun."

??
exactly. do you think they take nuclear scientist in to a room on their first day on the job and say "OK, big lump of uranium over there for you to use."

This is a training tool. I'm training her to hunt, to shoot for sport, and for defense of life and property.

USAF Academy: we give our pilots "trainer" planes before they fly fighter jets.
John Lee Pettimore @John Lee Pettimore: might as well give them nuclear launch codes, sociopaths.

I'm still waiting for you to articulate what is unsafe about the storage of that firearm - assuming I put it out of kids' reach when someone comes over.

What is the danger that firearm poses? How could it become a threat to person or property? Walk us through the scenario.

Do you leave your guns unsecured, just sitting on a table or in a drawer or whatever?

While John Lee Pettimore @John Lee Pettimore is surely a bit abrasive in this discussion, I too cannot understand at all how someone can even begin to argue that a gun being out in the open just in the corner of a room is safe enough around children, or safe enough to not be stolen.

If you own a gun here you have to keep em locked away and the fitting bullets locked away somewhere else in safe-like cabinets, even without children.

But well, cultural differences.

I've considered purchasing a gun many times, but two things end up stopping me every time:

1. I don't live in a shitty neighborhood.

2. I don't have a tiny penis.

If not for either of those two things, I'd probably own several guns tbh.
