I remember watching those fights and how insanely high paced they were. but the pace often didn't drop off and there were insane back and forth fights.

struggling to remember specific fights but remember characters like Buscape and Shogun, who never seemed to tire.

guessing they were on big drugs. tell me if I'm wrong, but I'm not sure any UFC fights have been anywhere similar. it feels like they had their own special drugs.

does anyone have any idea what drugs they might be, other than EPO? was it just epo? or were they just super-fit?

Exactly. It's not like the UFC has any lower weight, insanely high paced fights that go 3-5 rounds and no one in the UFC ever popped for EPO or blood doping ?

Most were on drugs, but also when you rewatch, there were a lot more lulls in Pride fights than we remember. The 10 and 5 minute structure or 10, 10, 5 meant there could be a flurry of action then several minutes just lying in the guard. The ring being smaller than the cage also meant less time spent circling.

I was in the gym with a guy you all know. This fucker barely trained but did EPO before a Pride fight he had. His cardio was outstanding during the fight, especially considering his training for the fight.

Is incentivizing steroid/PEDs use through such ventures more morally reprehensible than the meat grinder of MMA itself?

Should we draw a distinction between paying to watch men beat each other and paying for the same while they are chemically enhanced?

I've always been in favor of splitting sports into two divisions. The Real League, and the Roid League.

Real League is more prestigious, and everyone is drug tested all the time. Failing a test gets you kicked out of the league for good (subject to an appeals process)

The Roid League has no testing at all. Let's see what monstrous freaks science can produce if given a free hand. What does Vitor look and fight like, if we tell him that Jesus wants him to push the steroids as far as he can go?

Yes we should. We should be willing to pay more for chemically enhanced fighters. I’m at least somewhat serious about that.

This is how bodybuilding is. And if you want the real money you have to take roids and make the jump.

Buuuutttt, is there a difference in that and "bribing" guys to be willing to increase their risk of damage in the roid league? Actually...does the roid league lead to more injury?

Does anybody believe natty bodybuilders, though?

I bet a lot of athletes will be all for it, since they get to be the biggest, strongest, fastest and baddest possible version of themselves.

Actually...does the roid league lead to more injury?
Only one way to find out!

My primary worry would be that the Real League would be overshadowed by the numbers, performances, physiques and highlight reels that the roid monsters would put up week after week.

But hey, if you want to inject yourself with horse steroids starting at age 15, look like prime Brock by age 20, ragdoll everybody on the sports field all through your 20s and then die of exploding heart syndrome at age 32.......go for it! For science!

That's kind of my point. Is there something morally worse about that than us bribing fighters to punch each other in the head?
It seems you're saying no.

Nope, I don't believe so. As long as all parties are of age, have full knowledge of and consent to the fact that their opponent is pretty much going to glow in the dark thanks to all the chemicals he's infected himself with, then all is fine.
