Looks like the inside race out of an axle shaft joint.A mid 2000s BMW was pulled off the road broken down this morning and as I drove by I felt something get caught in my tire. At first I thought it was a flat or something as I was going slow and could tell tire was off. I pulled over and with a set of pliers pulled this from deep in the treads. Lighter for scale is standard size.

Its an accepted fact that cars in America are smaller than the rest of the world. It really does look like a broken bit of CV joint cage:
I'm just surprised at how small it is.

Hmmm...Why is that?
If I had a penny for every time I'd heard that phrase, I'd be a rich man
The CV is inside a rubber boot. You don't see it unless you got issues.Hmmm...
...now I think about it, perhaps it would be that size? I kind of pictured the CV joint itself as beoing bigger and chunkier, but the bit pictured is an internal part, so perhaps not. I've never dismantled one.

Now we’re getting somewhere.Looks like the inside race out of an axle shaft joint.
It wasn’t a crash, the BMW was broken down and pulled off. Guy was looking under it when I drove by.The CV is inside a rubber boot. You don't see it unless you got issues.
Pretty good crash to smack one to pieces like that.
Doesn't mean the part came from his car. Could have already been on the road and he was pulled over checking his hubcup fluid. It wasn’t a crash, the BMW was broken down and pulled off. Guy was looking under it when I drove by.
