WASHINGTON (TND) — The largest union representing U.S. flight attendants expects mask requirements on airplanes to remain for the foreseeable future, but U.S. Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., has plans to disrupt those expectations.
The Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA) told Bloomberg that it expects a current federal order compelling individuals to wear masks on public transportation to be extended. After already being extended three times previously, the order expires March 18, according to Bloomberg.
Paul said he has plans to disrupt the extension of the federal order by forcing a vote on his Travel Mask Mandate Repeal Act, which he introduced in 2021 .
“I have a bill that I am going to force a vote on in the next two weeks, on getting rid of the masks on airplanes,” Paul told Fox’s Dan Bongino. “It’s only theater. You can take them off for 15 minutes and breathe air, which is then recirculated to everybody else.”
Paul pointed out to Bongino that even though “the science isn’t changing,” leaders, including many Democrats, have begun lifting COVID restrictions due to increasingly negative opinions about keeping them up.
As COVID cases begin to fall, plans to lift mask mandates from several Democrat states and cities, like Illinois, Chicago and Washington, D.C., have been initiated.
“Even D.C., the most Democrat city in the entire country, the mayor put on vaccine passports two weeks ago, put businesses — put restaurants out of business. Well, she’s already relinquished it,” Paul said.
“And the thing is, I think ultimately the Democrats are going to wake up one day and say, ‘My goodness, everyone hates us now because we’re the nanny state.’ And so it’s happening, and it’s happening in a big way, and some of the Democrats are finally waking up,” Paul continued.
Last year, a family from Iowa was reportedly forced off their Southwest Airlines flight because their autistic son was unable to wear his mask, according to CNN. The company had reportedly implemented a “no exemptions” mask requirement, apart from babies under two-years-old, not long after COVID-19 reached the U.S.
