I'm 7 years ahead of the mainstream.

It is interesting to read in retrospect as although you and I don't agree on a lot of political things, you're very rarely unreasonable in your rationale. To see someone, who's closer to it than most of us, saying what you did on 2015 should be somewhat eye opening to some people and cast some of the pro-war, anti-Russia propaganda we're currently seeing in a different light.

But I think a lot of people like war and are fighting a lifetime of anti-Russian rhetoric so that's tough to do.

It's still absolutely unacceptable what is happening in Ukraine right now.

I like to believe that there was a small window of opportunity after the towers fell, where Russia and the west could have come together, it didn't happen tho.

It would also be interesting to know if Putin would have done it like this if ns2 would not have been targeted like it was tho.
As much as it's a trope, this too is a war involving oil and gas.

To your point, I would hope that to reasonable people it goes without saying that invading another nation is unacceptable. Trying to find reasons for motives however makes perfect sense. As I pointed out on the main Ukraine/Russia thread. The current CIA director told the U.S. government in 08 that this would happen if they didn't quit fucking around on Russia's doorstep. Here we are anyways.

To be fair tho to the splinter, this op was full of Russian talking points, because it was an attempt of seeing their perspective.

Either way, the Ukraine war now is not a logical conclusion, but a possible one. It's safe to say that Putin failed at country building. Their current demographic trend and one-sided economy is a big problem. The sanctions won't help. China can't just save them either.

Russia theoretically has this massive potential and had many opportunities to strive if they looked inside and forward instead of outside and backwards.
They still do, but not with Putin I'd say.

To be fair to "Russian talking points" that's just a term applied to any opinion that inconvenient to the Russia point of view whether it's real or not. "Whataboutism" generally falls into the same category. Whataboutism is definitely a thing but more often than not it's liberally applied to anything that's inconvenient.

I think one of the biggest things I've learned from this last week is that I was absolutely correct. Russia are not a credible threat to a modern western military. I suspect the same with China. Numbers don't mean fuck all if your shit at war, and Russia have always been shit at war. Look at starlingrad. They are gonna wind up doing it again because they have no military prowess. I think they will get to a point and say fuck it and drop big bombs on Kyiv.

Fair play to Ukraine, I don't think Russia expected them to stand firm, but they have shown Russia ain't shit.
