Military spending equal to the next ten countries combined.
I agree with your whole list but not this one as proper criticism or fair stat. It's a few percent and we carry the weight of NATO and essentially the entire western world through our ability to deploy power.

Framing it as a proportion against other countries. Really just ignores...we rich.

Also I support cutting our military budget but not because I think it's inherently bad to have a big military. We just have a lot of bloat right now.

we're back to stratifying the right to defend yourself based on income and status.
Nope. Stratifying via shared decision making and risk.

Trying to bring everything back to income and status is just a smoke screen to ignore that all training cost income and status.

I'm saying if you do sell ammo. It's illegal. Unless you have a license from the government and a traceable atf brand.
I know that is what you are saying. I'm telling you that isn't true. There is no law regarding the private sale of ammo.

but now you're putting a price tag on a natural human right.

"only people who can afford private security deserve to be protected by guns"

Mexico is a narco-state without an effective government, and is not part of the developed world.

"Only the cops have guns" is effectively the default across the entire developed world. Japanese, Germans, Australians, Scandinavians, everybody has armed cops, nobody has anything close to the gun culture or the number of guns on the streets that you do. Again - you are the richest and most technologically advanced nation in human history........ why not compare yourself to other developed nations?

??
better not tell the Israelis or the Swiss that only cops get to have guns.

Nope. The baseline category be for people with IQs at 75 and no training.

It'll escalate from there. Everyone can still go buy a gun. They just can't go buy any gun.

And we already acknowledged that this has some expectation of risk management. In reality. 18-year-olds can't purchase pistols from a dealer. I have to jump through hoops to get an automatic weapon.

We ought to just formalize this process across the spectrum.

  • They didn't give black people equal rights until the 1960s.
    • When did Britain give Indians equal rights? What's their human rights track record, if we're casting stones.
The what-about’ism is strong with this one.

The omnipresence of guns causes police to act violently and robs us of a professional police presence that protects us and deescalates by default.

OK - what level of self-defense does a functioning adult deserve?

so what?

the natural right to defend yourself from other humans, even ones in fancy hats with rich friends, hasn't changed.

sorry for the music.
right to defend oneself yes. we just disagree with what weapons that implies

i do not think people should be allowed to have:
- nuclear bombs
- attack helicopters
- tanks
- mines
- mortars
- rocket propelled grenades

im sure you and i would agree on at least some of those

when it comes to guns, i dont think most humans have the right to them. i think background checks and training at a minimum

and i havent thought through the topic in details, but i would probably go much further in terms of home defense laws. guns for home defense make more defense in rural areas then in populated areas where police are more readily available

i understand that arguments will then be made about the laws disproportionately affecting lower class. but ... i dont give a fuck

----

i also think other things would lessen the amount of violent acts of despair:

- universal healthcare
- higher minimum wage
- universal basic income

Socialism.

Have you tried changing the laws so that you have a lot more unplanned babies being raised by poverty-stricken mothers who don't have the resources or the ability to raise the kids properly? That should help.

??
I just want the quadbillions to go to current issues in this country.

Not sure about the rest of your post.
