I'm not a psychologist.

and I was not his psychologist.
But you have enough of a vested interest to know that he talked about homicidal feelings with his shrink, and you used that as an example of a systemic failure and as justification to deflect away from his guns.

So - okay.

What should the response to Holmes in that situation have been?

Given what hypothetical context?

since you want to go off conjecture

I dunno about you guys but Filthy @Filthy thoroughly convinced me itt.

IMO the gravestones of the kids should get two amendments:

By definition it wasn't an assault rifle.

Luckily it wasn't hand guns.

Given the entirely non-hypothetical context of exactly what he did.

He talked about his homicidal feelings/fantasies to his shrink. The shrink did nothing. You made a sarcastic comment about that.

Okay - so given what James Holmes was presenting at the time....... what should have happened, to prevent this deeply and obviously mentally ill and completely socially isolated person from arriving at the movie theatre with a bunch of completely legal guns and a full suit of body armour?

??

I don't think this country is mentally healthy enough to allow easy access to guns.
We kind of need to start reducing the availability of them and increase the availability of mental health services.

since in the US you have the right to freedom of movement, doesn’t that entitle you to a car as a right, no training, licensing or insurance according to the guntard logic?

I don't know the context of when he said it, so I don't know if a different counseling approach would be more appropriate than notifying LE and attempting to have him committed.

Just like the Uvalde killer, he presented disturbing anti-social behavior on a regular basis and our mental health care system was woefully unprepared for it. I'm sure lots of people talk about violent fantasies with their therapist, but our ability to differentiate the people who will act on those fantasies is lacking.

I'm not "deflecting" with this case in specific, but noting that these are obviously very disturbed individuals and we need to get better at identifying them. Taking away all the guns in the world without addressing the existence of these people is just going to get schools bombed and parades attacked with SUVs.

I've seen how it works when the gov't tries to ban things people want, like drugs and whores. The social cost of prohibitions of that nature are far higher than the aggregated costs of the activities the prohibitions target.

Unfortunately, the Founding Fathers explicitly wrote that the Constitution could never be amended, ever. Not once, not twenty-seven times, not twenty-eight times.

??
read the PreAmble to the bill of rights and you'll maybe understand why the first 10 aren't repeal-able.

But by all means, the right way to address your feelings about firearms is to create a new Constitution. We'll need 2/3 of both Houses and 3/4 of the States to then ratify it.

Good Luck.

you can buy and own as many cars as you want without any form of licensing, training, or insurance.
