I had been led to believe that Russia merely conquered urkranian land for the port, but if I'm not mistaken, the majority of the crimeans wanted to secede to Russia
Edit: and also, if I'm not mistaken, there were the Minsk accords, which the west violated, playing a factor in Russias current invasion

The Ukraine had a Russian friendly government. In 2014the U.S. government funded a public uprising that lead to the pro-Russian government being replaced by a pro-NATO government. At this point the Ukrainian energy provider decided that "Hey, we should hire the vice-president's son with no qualifications to run us."
That land was agreed upon to be used by the Russians as per the Soviet breakup. The American's told the Ukrainians to evict them. Because it's Russia's only access to the Black Sea, they said "Homie don't play that."
Long story short, Hunter was involved in the Ukraine's making of geo-political decisions during that period.
