Amazing architecture. And the Saudi's have more money than they know what to do with...but fuck all that. Gimme my existence in rural suburbia, population 14k.
Rural sucks in the desert

Saudi prince will allocate $1 trillion to build a 170 km long horizontal skyscraper Mirror Line, which will be higher than the Empire State Building

What we know
The ambitious project will be part of the desert city of Neom, whose size will be comparable to that of Massachusetts. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman believes that the new city will be as iconic a project as the Egyptian pyramids.

The skyscraper will be called Mirror Line. It will consist of two parts with a height of 488 m. For comparison, the height of the Empire State Building is 381 m. The Mirror Line will be in the top 15 tallest buildings in the world and take 13th place if nothing taller is built by then. And there is time. The Mirror Line is expected to take 50 years to build, although Prince wants the project completed by 2030.

The two parts of the skyscraper will run through the desert, coast and mountains parallel to each other. Architects will take the curvature of the Earth into account when designing the building. Mirror Line will have a separate underground high-speed train line, a stadium at a height of 304 m and a pier
for ships.

Experts in environmental planning do not approve of the Crown Prince's idea. Experts believe the Mirror Line's length and mirrored glazing could affect the migration of animals and migratory birds.
Lol this is almost like a fancy version of the peach trees in judge dredd the crime there will be sky high *PUN INTENDED*

Imagine what our roads, airports, cities could look like if corrupt politicians & elites weren’t laundering billions a year of OUR tax dollars thru unnecessary wars, policing of other countries we have no business being in, and controlled hubs like Ukraine. How some aren’t furious as hell about what’s been happening in America for decades is beyond me.

"In the doc, which is titled Kingdom Uncovered: Inside Saudi Arabia, it’s claimed that over 21,000 foreign workers have died during constructions as part of the Saudi vision 2030 project, which includes The Line.

LADbible Group has contacted the Public Investment Fund, which manages the Vision 2030 projects, and NEOM for a comment but as of writing they have not responded.

In the report by ITV, workers described themselves under the working conditions as ‘trapped slaves’ and ‘beggars’.

There have also been allegations of wage theft, illegal working hours and human rights abuses.

One devastating case in the documentary was of a Nepalese worker named Raju Bishwakarma who called his friends and family asking for help.

He allegedly said: “Please rescue me.”

He was later found dead in his room after being told that he would need to pay a fine of around five months’ salary in order to leave.

The Line is the biggest of the Saudi Vision 2030 projects, which has cost $500 billion.

As of 2022, the NEOM construction is underway, with excavation happening along the whole length of the project.

It is hoped that the first section of The Line, which is 1.5 miles long, will be finished by 2030 and will house around 300,000 people.

The Line will be split into 135 different connected communities called modules.

It is set to be a city powered entirely by renewable energy and will house around nine million residents.

However, reports say that more than 200,000 Indigenous people were forcefully removed from the region to make way for NEOM."

Did they?
I had seen an article on it earlier this year, wiki is saying it was due to funding. Lines up with the 1.5 miles by 2030.

2024 scaling back
[edit]
In April 2024 it was reported that the project had been "scaled back" after foreign direct investment investors had not "bought into the crown prince's vision", according to Torbjorn Soltvedt, principal analyst at risk consultancy Maplecroft. Fluctuating global oil prices had contributed to the decision.[10]

The Line was expected to complete an initial section of 2.4 kilometres (1.5 mi) long by 2030, with a population of 300,000 rather than the intended 1.5 million.[10]

The Saudi minister of economy and planning rejected the claims of scaling back. He said in an interview during World Economic Forum special meeting in Riyadh that "For NEOM, the projects, the intended scale is continuing as planned. There is no change in scale".[12] As of October 2024, Saudi Arabia intends to complete a 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) central segment of The Line by 2030, while completion of the full 170 kilometres (110 mi) project has been pushed to 2045.[9]
