If you are fan of Hogan's Heroes I strongly recommend this. It is basically HH. Instead of Stalag 13 it is 17. Even has a SGT Schulz in it. William Holden won an Oscar for it.

HH was sued

Donald Bevan and Edmund Trzcinski, the writers of the 1951 play Stalag 17, a World War II prisoner-of-war story turned into a 1953 feature film by Paramount Pictures, sued Bing Crosby Productions, the show’s producer, for infringement. Their lawsuit was unsuccessful. While the jury found in favor of the plaintiffs, a federal judge overruled them. The judge found "striking difference in the dramatic mood of the two works.

Full movie.

I put in the same league as The Lost Battalion, low-budget but a good WWI film. More psychological than action, deals with the mindset of these kids on the eve of the push. Also an early film of both Cillian Murphy and Daniel Craig, can see why they both became successful.
This was the other one I was thinking of but couldn't remember the name, excellent movie.

Need to check many of these out. Thin Red Line specifically, same director as The New World, which I loved.

I'll add this
