I'm surprised it didn't wear down naturally. What happens with wild horses?

Hunting dogs that are very active don't need their nails trimmed like house dogs do. All the running keeps them at the right length.

Wild horses don't need their hooves trimmed because they wear them down naturally. That lazy horse was hiding out in cushy spot with lots of food for 2 years.

Speaking of dogs. Farm dogs love farriers because dogs love when the horse's hooves get trimmed, it's like a delicacy to them.

That horse wasn't lost it was just neglected. I see it when farm kids move out on their own and leave behind a horse. It gets sent out to pasture with cattle which means forgotten. Once the horse decides it doesn't want to be ridden then nobody wants to mess with it at all.

I always hated holding t-bred horses while the farrier did their work. Super boring until the horse decides to bite you because it's bored too, or gets spooked and you have to try to keep a three-legged horse from hurting itself.

Only time I ever got kicked was doing that, although that was a passing horse that did it, and got spooked from the farrier's clang of the anvil, and nearly kicked my femur in half. Had a horseshoe-shaped bruise for three months after that.

I never got comfortable with it. Horses are like cats to me. I hate 99% of them and deeply loved the 1%.

They 100% have their own distinct personalities.

One stakes winner was the meanest bitch in the barn. She was like a trap door spider, she'd hide in the shadows of her stall, but if you walked too close to it, she'd pop out and try to bite you. And then bow her head at you like, "what? you want some of this?"

Then there was another, almost as good as a runner, who was a total sweetheart, and almost like a dog. She'd nuzzle against me, and I'd sing to her.
