I watched the challenger explosion live on TV and then saw the discovery launch 2 years later in Florida. Was sad when it got scrapped.

I was so fucking excited about the very idea of the shuttle. I remember the cover of popular science that had an article about it coming.
I also remember believing skylab was going to crash into my house.

Conspiracy theories abound that it wasn't really scrapped. Or more specifically that there was a parallel "deep gov" program that continued long after the front facing program was shuttered.
How could they keep the launches secret though?
There are more satellites in orbit than people in Wyoming, you see every one of those launches on tv?
Not seeing it on TV is one thing, keeping a shuttle launch secret enough that no-one (even foreign governments) notices it is entirely another.
