PG&E has just opened applications for an Apprentice System Operator. This position is for the transmission system operations GCC in Vacaville, CA. Once completed with the 2yr training program you’ll be controlling a portion of PG&E’s 60kV to 500kV transmission system (the distribution system operators will cover the lower voltages).

This is a great opportunity for someone but beware that if you have a family, I’d highly recommend once you’re on the desk that your wife stay at home & you be the sole provider. The divorce rate is extremely high for those whose spouse continue to work & kids were involved.

Also, the guys that were in my old apprentice class that promoted to dispatcher are all making 4-500/yr so it’s not like you’ll be hard pressed to provide for your family.

Anyway, I’m getting ready to head out so here’s the link:

During the apprenticeship I think 1hr. When on the desk after you turn out, zero. 12hrs straight through
For many of the postings you share what kind of background is typical? Are we talking recent HS grads, college/certification, experience in the field, etc

I ask because my son will be 16 this year and has an engineering concentration in HS (All kids at his school have one of 5 in addition to the standard curriculum.) He's still undecided on plans post-HS but I'd like to show him some of these if it's an option for him

As a heads up to anyone thinking of applying (or someone they know)

copy/paste the entire job description

shrink to smallest font available

paste to open portion of resume

color white

you’ll hit all the keywords & when the resume is printed during the interview, will be invisible. There’s a computer filter looking for keywords to eliminate you prior to testing

I should have clarified I read that particular posting but I know you've been posting these for years, even on the old forum.

I was trying to ask about in general is this a career path for out of high school or if there are consistent pre-reqs
Tbh my class had one kid just a couple years out of hs. He had some sort of college background & really was smart as hell. He didn’t make it as he wasn’t mature enough in the professional setting.

My personal opinion is a solid 6yrs of military experience or college & or work experience would be extremely useful here. The amount of stress this will put on you can’t be underestimated.

I’m going to hit the sack. Will check back in the morning

I'll accept the position if I can work from Best Carolina. No need for an interview, my reputation precedes me. Also, I need at least 11 one hour poop breaks on a 12 hour shift.

In all seriousness, I appreciate you making repeated attempts to help better people's lives, you're a good dude, despite being from California. I remember seeing you post in another thread that you're thinking of eventually looking for property in Best Carolina, specifically Horry County. I've got family there and my Uncle owns a real estate brokerage firm that covers that half of the state, he can probably help you find something if/when the time comes.

Thanks man. It’s very much appreciated.

I’m stuck here until we’re done taking care of my in-laws. At that point it’ll be a serious assessment. Considering how slow Alzheimer’s is & that I’m about 8yrs away from medical for life vesting, timelines might just lineup for around then. That’ll put me at 55-56. My plan was 62 but be one bad day away at 59.5. Can likely pick up a position for a few years out there in Columbia or Cayce to finish off retirement contributions if needed.

Anyway I’ll quit rambling.

If there’s any questions about the posting or program feel free to ask. I don’t work for PG&E but did go through this apprenticeship. It’s extremely tough & recognized as one of the top programs in North America.

Cayce is pretty great, lived there a few years. If I didn't have school-aged kids I would have stayed

I'm in Irmo now, wanted to be closer to Murray
Cayce has a control room, so does Columbia. I’d like to retire closer to the water but will see what happens. I’d likely just rent a work apartment or house if needed. Did that for a few years while working on the road. Kept my Morro Bay house & rented where I needed to.

Where were all these great opportunities when I was younger? Very cool of you to post it, though. Maybe I'll forward it to my nephew.

If anyone out there knows of great opportunities out there for someone older, let me know. I'd like to get out of law enforcement.

The journeyman I trained with throughout my apprenticeship didn’t start until around 40. He was a federal correctional officer prior. Just an FYI

Yeah. I'm older than that. 49

I'm confused as to exactly what this job is. I showed it to my nephew, who is an electrician and he was kinda confused too. It's dispatching? Or is it working at a power company? Why the high divorce rate? Are you away for long periods? I guess I'm just not familiar with this area

I know you want to get out of LEO but security at federal court houses is pretty damn good, mon-fri and pays very well. I know 5 retired troopers that went to them.
