I think he's preparing the public (those still asleep), more than he is the politicians in DC.
I am pro Pledge of Allegiance in every school, it reinforces a shared set of values. I am opposed to forced prayer in schools. Religion and prayer are private and to be respected as such, its inappropriate, and unconstitutional, in my opinion. If it's that important to you send your kids to a religious school.
