In Turkey, 35 olive pits, 28 date seeds and 5 'stones' were removed from the stomach and intestines of a 92-year-old woman.
The “stones” are bezoars, or concretions of previously swallowed seeds that formed over years. This lady almost died from years of swallowing pits and seeds that pretty much anyone knows you shouldn’t swallow. Her small bowel died and perforated, and the section of necrotic bowel was removed, the remaining bezoars and random pits were evacuated from her stomach, and the patient survived
No small feat for a person of her age to survive any surgery, much less a perforated bowel and the accompanying risk of dying from septic shock. It’s charming that she has embraced her role of cautionary tale, and is now urging people not to swallow large seeds!
