General Amazon MGM takes over James Bond

Michael G. Wilson & Barbara Broccoli / the Broccoli family own Eon Productions. They've been producing Bond movies forever.

Yesterday they handed creative control of the Bond franchise over to Amazon MGM.

My initial reaction is / was "FUCK" and that they'll woke-ify TF out of it. I've not watched Rings of Power, Watchmen, etc, as I don't care about those franchises, but I've heard enough to know that they fucked them up.

Amazon is supposed to do a Warhammer project, and brought on Hencry Cavill to star & be a producer. Cavill is an enormous, life-long Warhammer fan & is a stickler for wanting to stick to source material (which is why I guess he left Witcher). He's apparently left the Warhammer project because Amazon didn't wanna stick to source material...not sure how true that is.

On the flip side, Amazon made / is making Terminal List & Reacher, both of which are extremely good, kick a lot of ass, & stay very true to source material.

Amazon also made Jack Ryan - first season was excellent, which each subsequent season getting worse (including a season fighting a right-wing extremist govt in Venezuela...lmao, seriously?)

So...what do y'all think? Is Amazon gonna fuck it up?

As someone that's really gotten into James Bond movies, books, lore, etc in the last year or two, I don't like it, but am hopeful that I'm wrong.

I saw something a few weeks / months back that the new Bond was gonna "modernize" him or write him for "modern audiences" or some kinda verbiage like that.

I've seen people saying they don't want a bunch of bullshit spinoff series & such. I dunno about that.

If they did movies every say 2-3 years with a mini-series / limited series not involving Bond, it could be good. Like a tech-based mini-series centered around Q & the shit he makes could be fun. Or maybe a prequel series centered on M or something.

Follow how the John Wick universe is being built out.

Amazon is very hit-or-miss, but it seems to be extreme either way - when they hit, it's fantastic. But when they hit, they absolutely FUBAR it.

Ugly sombitch has no charm hes an asshole and he had to lift weights to be seemingly decent for the job. As bad as she was (and she was), Amazon will be far worse. Several months ago, there was a story in the Wall Street Journal that said that in her first meeting with Amazon execs they all referred to Bond as "content" and one of them said to her that Bond is a bad guy. The also want to do more spinoffs, more merchandising and have more input from its algorithms in developing all of that.

I wouldn’t exactly classify “Reacher” as a shining example. They don’t seem to be able to do a season without bringing the black female he was in the MPs with into the story, and now she’s getting her own series on top of that.

I don't even know anyone who has watched a Bond film in years... Haven't looked at the numbers but I assume they've all been flops lately and it makes sense to just skip theatrical release and go direct to streaming.

Anyway I think when you already screwed with the casting.. You opened the door to this. Nobody wanted a blonde bond.

I don’t think that matters to audiences overall as much as it does to some purists. Three of the top 10 grossing Bond films adjusted for inflation are from the Daniel Craig era, with Skyfall being #1 overall.
What the Craig films lacked in a Bond with iconic looks as described in the books (only truly achieved by Connery and Dalton) they made up for in gritty action more akin to Fleming’s stories than some of the films that predated them. The hard-edged, serious Bond beats the smooth, wisecracking versions any day.
