Its very expensive
Yea I've had to buy waders, jacket, shotgun, ammo, dekes, and other odds and ends this year. And probably a dog in the spring. But it's my first year. Next year shouldn't be as bad.

Same, but how many can say they've eaten a mallard duck that cost a couple thousand dollars?

EXACTLY! And I'd gladly pay it again. It's been great, I'm fucking hooked.
In all honesty, the only things I've bought that don't serve purposes outside of waterfowling are my calls, layout blind, and decoys. My boots, jacket and bibs all see regular use, and my shotgun is definitely an across the board hunting tool. I already had my pickup and my dog is awesome. Even if she isn't a prolific bird dog, we're more than happy to have her.

Yea I'm hoping the dog I end up getting is a great good and decent bird dog. Doesn't need to be an all star.

If there's one thing that we've learned from our dog and that we've learned talking to others it's that you get out what you put in. If you have your dog live outside, and only train it once in a while leading up to bird season you aren't going to get the results of someone who spends a lot of time with their dog. The absolute best place to start is this book:

Yea I'm not down with the whole dog living outside thing, it's not for me. Dogs are a part of the family for me.

Same, and it concerns me when people think dog ownership consists of a fenced in backyard pen, and a food dish. Of course, my dog is also laying on the couch between Mrs. Beard and I, so fuck me, right? lol
