With a number of big-name UFC fighters currently seeking their value on the open market – all of them represented by the Florida-based firm First Round Management – the firm’s CEO, Malki Kawa, admits he’s not sure if we’re seeing a new era in contract negotiations or simply an interesting anomaly.

“I don’t know if this is necessarily going to be a wave of the future,” Kawa told MMAjunkie. “I can tell you I’ve been doing this in the UFC for about seven years, eight years now, and this is the first time I’ve been in a position where I’ve had four clients all in the same month just become free agents. If I told you that I planned this out, I’d be lying to you because that’s not what happened.”

Nevertheless, Kawa and his firm are currently working with Benson Henderson, Aljamain Sterling,Alistair Overeem and Sarah Kaufman, all of whom fought out their UFC contracts within the past month.

The first high-profile athlete to complete his deal was Henderson (23-5 MMA, 11-3 UFC).

“My partner Wayne actually is meeting with the UFC this week to start negotiating his deal,” Kawa said. “They’ll make an offer, they’ll hear Ben out, and we’ll go from there. If Ben wants to shop around and see what it is, they’ll probably let him do it. Then he’ll go get an offer and bring it back to them, and they’ll have an option to match it or let him go.

“I think they’re going to do that rather fast as opposed to slow. I think that from a matchmaking standpoint, they have to get their plans together for 2016.”

While the UFC typically retains exclusive negotiating rights for fighters for the first 90 days after their contract expires, Kawa said the UFC was happy to waive that period for Sterling when the two sides didn’t agree on a new deal. The UFC still maintains matching rights, meaning they can decide whether or not to match any formal offer made by a competing promotion.

“Aljamain’s case it was, ‘Here you go. If you think guys can get a better deal than what we’re offering, then go ahead and go look around and bring it back,’ and that’s where we are with Aljamain,” Kawa said. “I didn’t have to wait 90 days. I think the UFC, with having so many shows and having so much stuff going on, them holding a guy doesn’t make any sense for them either. Let’s move forward. Are we making this happen or not?

“‘Why don’t you go see what he’s worth, and come back and let’s talk when you have some solid numbers. Let’s not pull numbers out of the air.’ And I appreciated that. That’s something that worked out for Aljamain.”

They can't let Overeem go, so they'll have to pay whatever he wants. They shouldn't let Benson or Aljamain go, but we'll see.

Problem with the matching is still that sponsorship money is not a part of that. Even if the UFC matches, the fighter most likely still earn less.

And the advantage rival orgs do have, is not represented in the normal offer.

I loving coming to TMMAC and reading these types of threads. I look forward to more fighters testing the waters. if the ufc is going to keep anyone, its going to be Alice... they would be stupid to let bendo go as well, but bellator cold honestly build the hw division around overeem.. I could honestly see the return of ubereem in bellator as he destroys inferior opposition.

imagine a 260lb. black He-Man destroying chumps on national television? if that doesn't capture the attention of the casual, idk what will.

Bellator has made an offer to Kharitonov, but so has the UFC so we'll see who he goes with.

Would be great to see Bellator get Sergei and Overeem

I agree with you until your last sentence. Fighters and fans won't win beig vitriolic. Sounds like zuffa is fair dealing them, that's great news and good on them. I hope it works out for him in the open market and zuffa matches.

I like Post Title Benson a lot. Guy seems like a animal lately. I don't care where he fights. Just as long as he makes his money and I can watch.

I'm not a fan of Reem at all. But that dude has a huge price tag already. He's making Championship money as a contender. Will Zuffa pay him more? Not sure. But good for Reem. I hope more fighters can make more money.

Bellator needs guys like Benson an Reem imo

Dana's 'Clip of the Day' today was RDA finishing Benson. Might just be a coincidence, but RDA has no fight coming up, so I'm gonna take it as a sign that negotiations aren't going how the UFC thought they would.

OK, so I'm gonna been this broken down for me barney style.
Matching rights.
Bendo goes to Bellator, Bellator offers $1 and ufc counters with 1, does bendo have to stay at the ufc? What about if Bellator offers $1 and ufc offers $2?

Dana's tweet probably does mean negotiations are going poorly. Now, he will start the Benson sucks tour and forget that the guy was the short notice king for a bit and fought whoever the UFC threw in his way. I hate Dana. Fuck him and his snow filled driveway.

This is actually a solid sign that shows that negotiations aren't going as well as the ufc would like them to go. as you stated, its not like the ufc is hyping RDA up for an up-coming fight. the man just won, so why post a clip of ben Henderson getting koed? seems like dana is trying to jab at bendo's stock. bendo is on a winning streak, in short notice fights, in a different weightclass. im sure he has solid leverage against the ufc.

lets wait a couple of days. the next clip of the day will probably be overeem getting koed by silva.

Good. Fuck em. Hope Benson goes to Bellator and gets PAID. Sponsor money will be 10x more over there, so there's that...

Dana also tweeted out a clip of Werdum submitting Fedor this week as well. The guy always has an agenda (Rizin week), so you can bet your ass he's trying to diminish Ben's stock with that propaganda.

I hope Ben finds out and it's the final straw that causes him to sign with Bellator.

With Askren moving to 185 and the new same day weigh ins policy, Bendo could dominate 170 in OneFC, potentially even opening a market for them in Korea.
