The biggest fight boxing could make right now, both from an entertainment and business standpoint, is almost certainly a middleweight title unification bout between WBC champion Canelo Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) and WBA and IBF champion Gennady Golovkin (34-1, 31 KOs). After Canelo's win over Miguel Cotto in November, the WBC granted both men voluntary defenses of their titles in lieu of Canelo immediately facing Golovkin, who is the WBC interim champ and mandatory challenger. Once those fights are out of their way, we'll see what happens from there, because boxing is just that way. If the fight is to happen in 2016, it'll probably be in September during Mexican Independence Day weekend.

In the meantime, ESPN's Dan Rafael reported that talks have begun for Golovkin to make his mandatory IBF title defense against Tureano Johnson (19-1, 13 KOs). It would be an HBO (non-PPV) event held at New York's Madison Square Garden, where Golovkin made his PPV headlining debut vs. David Lemieux last October. According to Boxing Scene, "K2 Promotions has placed a hold for an April 23 date at the venue."

If that date sounds familiar, it's the same night that the UFC has scheduled UFC 198, also at Madison Square Garden. The targeted main event is a rematch between Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones for the light heavyweight title. Obviously pro MMA still isn't legal in New York yet, but unlike previous years where the UFC merely reserved a date at MSG, they've actually formally announced the event as if it will happen*. Hopefully we'll know whether or not it'll actually be in NYC very soon.

Honestly, I have no hope for this happening (the UFC this year anyway). It sucks, because this is literally the day after my birthday, and I would KILL to see the UFC's debut at MSG. I've been to MSG (before the renovation) and man. Walking through those halls, I was like holy fuck. SO many amazing things have happened in this building, god damn. Just gave me a vibe different than any arena I'd ever been to, similar to the old Yankee Stadium when I went there.

I'd love to see GGG fight live though. If I can find someone to accompany me on the trip, I am really gonna try to make it to MSG for that date! Would be an epic birthday thing for me, and I never do anything for birthdays. I am a hugeeee GGG fan, but GOD DAMN, to see the UFC debut in NY @ MSG would be amazing.

I predict the UFC will build a replica of MSG and plop it inside Cowboys Stadium for the card on the 23rd

I think we know what's going to happen, no? Hey, at least Cormier doesn't have to get demolished by Jones in new yawk. Jones will now ok the bout wherever Cormier wants to get absolutely dismantled.......I can't wait.

Well seeing as how they've had boxing in the Garden since 1925 and, as of right now, MMA is still unsanctioned in New York, I think the smart money is on seeing the great GGG in there in April instead of the UFC.

Yeah GGG is one of those must see fighters for sure. I'd love to get over there

This event was never going to happen at MSG. Not a chance. Even without the conflicting schedule. This is all just the UFC promoting the cause to get New York MMA legalized. It was always a publicity stunt.

Anyone notice a scheduling conflict here? MSG was never an actual thing that was going to happen.
