I didn't hear his comments but this is now the 2nd black fighter (the other being Mayweather) who has said this in the last week. I think there's a tendency to throw their opinions out the window simply because we know King Mo and Floyd are not the sharpest knives in the drawer, but I think that's a mistake because they have a point.

Like it or not, race matters in the US and when people of one group do something, it's perceived and reacted to differently than if someone from another group does it. It's a double standard. We can't change this (because this is deep rooted societal stereotype) but we just have to be aware of it. It's a real thing that white people (like me) are too quick to dismiss just because we're sick of hearing about it.

Twitter is losing their shit over Mo's comments. Maybe that's why he said it? Hmmmmm. ;)

I don't agree with Mo 100% but there's probably some truth in it depending in what group of fans you're referring to.

Some of the other fighters mentioned in this thread have the same personality trait as each other, being a polarizing figure. Jones, Ronda, Conor, Chael, PBF and Mo are all people who I think are either loved or hated. If Mo thinks Conor is unanimously loved by all he's delusional. All races get a variety of characters in the fight game but there does seem to be a bit of a pattern.

Is there a reason different for being a big name in the MMA depending on colour?Notable whites Chuck, Randy, GSP, Hughes, Weidman, Franklin, Frankie, Severn, Northcutt, Ronda, PVZ and many more have been promoted as good role models, nationalistic hero types, loved by most and so on. Then there's MMAs notable black fighters. Rampage is a fan favorite but usually seemed to be promoted as the scary black man or goofy clown guy. Randleman was The Monster, Evans was the cocky swagger guy, DJ gets nothing, Koschecks is the badass mouth piece, Manhoef had a leash on him, Mo is well, Mo. Anderson is probably one of the few black fighters to be out up on the good guy pedistal and they tried at first with Jon but not anymore and probably for good reason at this point. We just had Aljamain Sterling @Aljamain Sterling on for his Q&A and Wild @Wild asked the race question and he just said it is a factor too.

I'm sure they do, but Chael was a legit star in the UFC. Show me a black dude with a similar record & fan following. Popularity = Money in MMA. Trash talk = Popularity, but not for everybody. Seems like the brothas are getting a different label when they trash talk. That's all I'm saying.
Rampage?
Edit: oh, already posted, nevermind.

Edit2: Overeem is a big draw. Bigger than Fedor, no?

We were referring to guys that trash talk, & the fans response. Reem is like a big teddybear.

Ronda Rousey is a better example of race playing a large factor. If she was black, no way in hell does she get the same exposure.
if she was a male (specifically a black male) nobody would be criticizing and psycho-analyzing her every word and action. Women are held to a different standard.

Don't forget that Cormier is a good guy. He's the fun, lovable Olympian that loves pro wrestling.

I think there is some truth to that. I'm sure many will disagree with me but you have to admit that part of his appeal is that he is a white kid from Dublin, Ireland that has a charming accent. If Conor was a black dude from Detroit but said the exact same things that Conor does, his popularity would be a fraction of what it is.

Dear TMMAC Forumers (Did I just make up that word ? If I did, I'm laying claim to it. Dibbs!!!),

I haven't listened to the podcast, but the statement is true. Case in point: Jon Jones. Probably the best Mixed Martial Artist ever. People hated that kid for being arrogant, being flashy, being disrespectful to his opponents...Sound familiar? It's ok for Connor & the Diaz Bros. to show up guys during fights, but people had strokes when Anderson Silva did it. Same thing happened to Floyd Mayweather in boxing. Why can't Mighty Mouse pull ratings, but Dillishaw can? I've heard people say its a size thing, but is it REALLY? That 2 inches & 10 pounds make that much of a difference? I'm not calling anyone a racist, but things seem more than just coincidence when seen from a minority angle. By the way, I'm not hating on Connor. I love the kid. I'm just hitting you with facts. And to put the "Wins & KO's equal popularity" angle to bed, I give you Chael Sonnen. One of the most popular fighters & MMA's best trash talker in recent memory. He had a huge following. He also had a 9 win - 6 loss record in his last 15 fights. Of those 9 wins, 6 were by decision, with the only KO happening in Strike Force over Kyacey Uscola in 2007. Why was he such a big draw?

Before you dismiss what these guys are saying as simple race baiting, maybe take a look at it from their point of view.

Respectfully,
Random Black dude
Just because I have some spare time because it's cold as hell in Chicago and I don't feel like going out tonight...

Jon Jones - I never hated him for any of the reasons that you mentioned. I didn't like him because he just felt like a phony. I don't like people who seem like they're trying too hard and he was the perfect example of that. Now that he's been suspended and seems to have matured into himself and is just talking shit I'm starting to love the guy. He finally feels like a real human and he's a fucking badass... I can support that!
Conor - Not a fan. He's entertaining and a monster but I'm just not a fan. Maybe it's because I was a poor kid growing up but I hate guys who flash their money as though that makes them special.
Diaz Bros - Love them! They're so fucking absurd but it all feels real. They just want to fight even though they hate fighting but they have to fight because they didn't go to school to learn how to pay taxes so fighting for some bullshit money or whatever is all they can do even though they hate doing it because it sucks getting hit in the face by a bunch of hitters. 209 motherfucker, what!
Anderson - My absolute favorite fighter ever. I almost got my ass whipped by a bunch of rednecks in South Carolina the night that he choked Hendo out. He was such a weird, entertaining dude and it was like watching a superhero fight mere mortals when he was in his prime.
Floyd - AMAZING boxer. SHITTY human. Not a fan. Also, see Conor in reference to money.
Mighty Mouse - One of my favorites to watch. I don't expect violence but I do expect precision and love the way he listens and responds to his corner.
Dillashaw - I hate all things TAM so now that he's left I actually like him a little bit more but I can't wait to see Cruz beat that ass this weekend.
Chael - Didn't ever care to watch him fight, hated his fans, laughed my ass off at his ridiculous nature and how he was able to get people so worked up.
Rampage - Loved him years ago when I met him but kind of grew tired of him as he started bitching and moaning more and more.
Rashad - Meh. I've always been indifferent about him. I've cheered for him at times and accidentally flipped a table at Buffalo Wild Wings celebrating him being destroyed by Lyoto.
Mo. Hate him. He seems to be super cocky, whines a lot, and then snuggies people. May be a great person but he's an annoying twat.

Now ALL of that being said, Mo is 100% correct in regards to a retarded portion of the world. But because I'm a white guy from a small town in the South that looks like an extra that was cheering after Ed Norton won the game and took over the basketball court in American History X it really pisses me off because for me race is not at all part of which fighters I support.

So for me, Mo and Conor are both cunts but I'll actually watch Conor fight because I have zero expectations that he's going snuggie someone to death.

V/R,
Your Friendly Neighborhood White Dude

Correct, crushing stereo types left and right.

If Daniel hadn't have stated his love of Popeye's chicken so much in the past that would be one of the most racist videos ever. But he gives zero fucks about it because Popeye's chicken is delicious.

I'm agreeing with but just showing some examples of why race is an issue in MMA still. I'm a big fan of DC in and and out the cage and think he's one of the "good guys" too. I just asked the question in my first post in here if there is a pattern, go through a majority of black famous MMA fighters and see what type of rep they have compared to others.

There's an issue with race in America. That definitely carries over to MMA.

I will say that I've been shocked and pleasantly surprised at how Fox Sports has put so many black fighters at the forefront of their broadcasts. DC, Rashad, and Yves are all regulars. Hell, they even gave Koschek a shot.

They've really done a solid job of mixing those guys with Bisping, Stann, and Cruz and the best part is that none of them come off as meatheads. They're just some solid dudes up there breaking down fights and making it seem like they're having fun.

The sport and the nation need more of this.
