The UFC is targeting a matchup between Khabib Nurmagomedovand Tony Ferguson for an April 16 UFC on Fox event.

Sources confirmed the news to MMAFighting.com's Ariel Helwani after Michael Johnson, who was expected to face Ferguson March 5 at UFC 197, withdrew from their affair for undisclosed reasons.

Nurmagomedov (22-0) has not competed since UFC on Fox 11 in April 2014. At that event, he defeated current UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos via unanimous decision. Overall, "The Eagle" is 6-0 in UFC action.

Ferguson (20-3), meanwhile, has been one of the most active – and successful – fighters in the UFC's 155-pound class of late.

The former The Ultimate Fighter Season 13 winner has won seven straight, most recently defeating Edson Barboza Dec. 11 at The Ultimate Fighter 22 Finale.

Nurmagomedov vs. Ferguson will appear on the main card at the April UFC on Fox event, but it is currently unclear whether it will serve as the main event and where the event will take place. The current front-runner is the state of Florida.

I would be confident him getting the win if it was a 5 rounder. 3 rounds is hard to call. Hopefully Tony gets the job done his style of fighting is very entertaining.
Good point, it should be 5. Tony takes it so.

Great news, now make Pettis vs Barboza and Alvarez vs Diaz. Also, regarding all three fights, I can think every fighter can win each fight.

Well, in Mother Russia the Nurmagomedovs train vigorously day in and day out. Of course father keeps a watchful eye as the boys wrestle, but sometimes his back is turned. Details to come in the near future.

Now THIS has got me excited.
El CuCuy with his constant aggressive pressure and sloppy wrestling.
vs.
ElKhaBear with his constant aggressive pressure and super wrestling.

There will be no stalling.

Best idea I've read in awhile. I'd love to see all 3 fights on the same card with Conor/RDA winner at cageside.

Please let this go down, although, could they give Tony a harder road?
Listened to him on Ariel's podcast and he will fight anyone, he doesn't care who it is or how tough it appears , he said UFC asked him to move down to that division and he said fine he was going to pick everyone off one by one......
