Rulon Gardner – Is the only Greco-Roman wrestler in American history to win both an Olympic and World Gold Medal and retire undefeated in Mixed Martial Arts fighting. Granted he only had 1 fight but undefeated is undefeated. In 2001 he won the ESPY and Sullivan awards as America’s Athlete of the Year before becoming a Distinguished Member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. Apparently The Biggest Loser is America’s Biggest Winner.
Empty Chair – Myron Roderick – Tonight’s event is named for the tallest of the sports legends, Myron Roderick. As an athlete he won 3 NCAA Championships for Oklahoma State during a time when freshman weren’t eligible to compete or he might have been America’s first 4-time NCAA champion. Then he turned around and became the youngest coach in NCAA history to win an NCAA Championship at the ripe old age of 23; the first of seven championships he directed his Cowboys to. From there he became the first Executive Director of USA Wrestling, the first Executive Director and co-founder of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and then the Director of Athletics for Oklahoma State. Needless to say he’s a Distinguished Member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and through all this . . . why this event is named in his honor and we have an empty chair up here because we know how much he would enjoy being here.
